As far as I know this unlucky number 13 is based on Roman history. At some point in Roman history legion 13 was isolated and wiped out by an enemy force. And ever after that event 13 was considered an unlucky number.

I am probably wrong about this. Legio XIII was one of J. Caesar`s favored Legions as discussed here:

But I recall reading somewhere that Caesar insisted on creating a new Legio XIII in defiance of having said legion number being seen as a cursed legion. I can NOT find a reliable source for that statement. ...Oscar
