They are hardcore about it in India. The brides family pays the grooms family with money, land, cattle or whatever else in order for the grooms family to take in the bride. Then a lot of times if the dowry is not enough, or she won't pay more, the family will burn her to death. Apparently 600-700 women die this way alone per year in India

I saw a documentary on that, it was sad. I'ma make sure my wife pays her full dowry, don't wanna burn her.
