It would not work for me personally because I do not have the type of personality that gives into someone making my choices for me. My spirit is too rebellious and I am not sure love would ever result. That being said, I love culture and if a country has that as their tradition, I think it is cool. As long as both partners are accepting of the situation, peace and harmony can prevail and perhaps love can blossom. Their idea of marriage is not always the same as what we have in America or the west. We want it for love....they do it for survival, partnership, reproduction, tradition, etc.
it might be someone else's culture, but so is the caste system and female circumcision. I think it's uncivilized and primitive.
I love arranged marriages. Since I can not get a girl myself, I would love it if someone would arrange a marriage for me.
When I see it, it kind of makes me sad. It is like their freedom to choose is taken away. But it is so common around these parts. Sometimes I honestly think I am an alien watching the strangeness unfold.
my great grandmother was married at age 14 to a much older man that her parents chose for her. long story short - she shot and killed him after they had 12 kids and didnt get in any legal trouble because it was ruled self defense. on my fathers side, arranged married is very common and its what is expected.
Not cool. its like trading property... I would be dead long ago if I had to put up with bullshit like that.
to be fair, the sort of woman who'd allow someone else to put her into an arranged marriage isn't the sort of woman who'd get at divorce if things were really awful, either. it's like putting a baby elephant in chains when it's very small. when it grows older, you can keep it where you want it with a small rope.
Personally, I would rather have a mail-order wife. Then, my wife would move in with me without knowing anyone and barely speaking english. I would have full control over her, no decision making problems. Arranged marriages give women too much.
It is different than what I am used to, but I wont judge it as there is primitive activity around me on a daily basis. They are hardcore about it in India. The brides family pays the grooms family with money, land, cattle or whatever else in order for the grooms family to take in the bride. Then a lot of times if the dowry is not enough, or she won't pay more, the family will burn her to death. Apparently 600-700 women die this way alone per year in India http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bride_burning
