Hello there, I'm from Jersey, sadly at the moment, and this past summer, i had the unfortunate experience of being infested by Chiggers, mostly on my feet and lower legs. Man, one of the worst nature problems I've had in all my years with nature...i'd rather have poison sumac again than chiggers. Not only do the bite itch worse than sumac, but the little bugars crawl under your skin and pop out wherever. Then the bite blisters and runs puss. After you get rid of them, the left over bite continues to itch fiercely for months and leaves a scar for months after.

So I ask you people that live with them each year, where the Ozarks are famous for chiggers... what do you do to prevent getting them?

I was wearing pants and boots and still got them. I later learned that they nest in the smalll cobwebs on the ground and should avoid stepping on them.

    What else should I know?

Thanks in advance for any help.
    Peace everyone

Last year I bought some "Garden sulfur" at Home Depot. Just looked for it so I could tell the brand but I CAN'T FIND IT! AUUUGGGHHHH!! ... anyway, this kind comes in granular form, so I put it in the coffee grinder, grind it to a powder. Mix half and half with talcum powder (baby powder) ... keep it on the kitchen table so it's ready for use at all times ... slap it on wrists, ankles, bottoms of pant legs, around the neck area, waist band area, whenever going into long grass or (especially) the woods.

Never wear shorts. Lightweight long pants are best for summer (keeps the chiggers off!)

I've heard of people who buy dog or cat flea collars and strap them one around each ankle before going outside.

Another suggestion, after going into the great outdoors in "chigger weather," upon returning indoors, remove ALL CLOTHING and jump in the shower or bath! Scrub down with a loofah!

And then, there's the idea of just staying inside whenever the temp goes over 60F ... (sigh!)

Thanks for the tips, I thought of the flea collar one, but never got to it, but is the sulfur one safe for your skin?
As for staying inside...never happen, not in warm weather. I walk in place of woods many would never go...I make my own paths. And I always wear long pants, but I should wear brighter colors, I know bugs like dark clothes.
    Peace to you

Brighter colors ... there's "hunter orange"! ... NICE bright color ... 'cause that's another little thing ... about all the time the temp is UNDER 60F ... the hunters are out there! [IMG]

Don't know if the sulfur is bad for your skin. SMELLS bad ... I do know CHIGGERS are bad for your skin.

Anyone near Fayetteville or anywhere near the NWA area? I happen to know that there's Rainbow People in Fay as well as Eureka Springs. I would LOVE to hear from ya! Springtime is here and I want some camping, fishing and hiking companions to show me around the Natural State and share some good times!
