i play guitar and sing.... i studied piano for 10 years. my dream was to be a concert pianist... but my family moved away from the city, which posed a problem as far as finding a suitable teacher went (you need a teacher that exceeds you in skill generally... until you get to a certain point... which is above a grade 10 playing level), and i began to develop severe tendonitis in my arms and shoulders and wrists from the hours and hours and hours of practice, which rendered me basically a cripple for the next 3 or so years shortly after "quitting"..... sigh.... and then what... and then i moved away from home and didn't have access to a piano at all, so i havn't played in about 10 years, and i remember how to play.... moonlight sonata.... l'air limpide, i think it's called... and.... various snippents of numerous shuman sonatinas.... LOL! funny how you put SO much into one thing, and then you sorta just forget it all when you walk away from it.... hmmm...... i kinda have a musical affinity actually, i played flute in school... also wrote, composed, and recorded an albumn for my senior year high school music credits.... i love music would LOVE to learn to play the cello. there are no teachers here, but someday, somehow, i will learn to play cello!!!!
me too... i've tried to play one, but strings are SO much different than piano... and guitar, i picked up very easily... something about the coordination of the bow really screwed me up when i tried to do it.... i need a teacher!!!!
I sing, love to sing. Love to perform, LOVE music. I sing when I'm happy/sad/annoyed: whatever! It just makes me feel so good. I was never able to stick w an instrument long enough to get realli good at it. I tried violin, guitar and piano. The thing about my voice as it just naturally flows out of me and I can do whatever I want w it. It's all I need. My brother plays guitar and drums, he is amazing at both so he's started recording and I'm going to write and sing over it. I'm excited, I love writing too-it just comes so naturally to me. It's amazing the things that can flow out of you.
swhen i was 5 played violin so well i was in the highschool orchestra it was boring tho..lol when my bro was takinmg trumpet for a few years and getting good i picked it up and in 2 weeks practice was at least equal in skill. got bored with that then \one day was given a baby dgimbe never "learned how to play" it i just moved mt hanfds and was as natural as breathing. when therrress already a rythem that is, theni can follow it and build on it till the rythems raging and i cant believe how fast my hands are moving. i know nothing of theory or anythif anymore when i learned violin i was taight i think its called the sazukki methid, no reading music, just play what u hear so u listen and learn to expect the changes even the 1st time playinmg or jamming you hear everythung comming before it comes. when i platyerd trumpet tho i dod teach myself to read music but forgot it all in drum circles we have between 10 and 500 drummers all playing together. at times ppl come into the beat with som, ething totaly chaotic to the rest of the beat when in a large circle my attention shifts alot, sometimes im following a particular drummer, othertimes im playing what everu single ones playimg and adding my own lil flair (at tikmes thios can get too much and remind me how reatrded my hands can be tryingto keep up with 500 individual heartbeats and asddinfg in my own) and at times when a dischordic beat comes in i try to unite with that beat and guide it into the harmony of the rest i cannot claim to know how to play djuimbe, cleaerly when i try to play with no other beat to feed off ofd i stumble and fail.. but djimbe alowes the drum to play you. you place yoir hand on the skin you feel the vibration from the beat making the drum come alive then u just allow yoir hands to emphasize the beat thats alrewady there it really is as natural as breathing unless u apply efgo, or striggle for control. thats whern the beats go wronmg, 1 drummer oit to prove how good he is and destroying the harmony in the process. i find when im drumming for hours and hours drumming takles the place of breath, my eyes close (or are fixed on the fire) i slip into a meditative state almost and i diont think i breathe at all unless i remind myself too (which tends ti make me stumble over a beat or 2) i also played barembau (spelling?) a while, loved loved loved it, what an amazing yet simple instrument. and at my 1st gatgering i was tripping really hard and came across a music tent outside the tent was a pit drum, an earth pit 50 feet acrodss with a skin stretched xross it, next to that was a hollow tree with a perch 30 feet up, a skin stretched across thart (and haqs an opening neasr rthe bottom for the sound to come out) in the tent were 2 harps 5-6 guitars ukelalies mandolins drums galore flurtes ..you name it i was tripping hard so sat down with a buddy with the harps..never played 1 b4 but we just plucked the strings that lit up and glowed and the sounds that came out were so magical so beautifyul anyway my opoint is i cant play anything really, but i can bang on thr drum all dsay its amazing when your drumming hsrd 6 hours feels like 5 minutes u never want to stop \im drying to drum havenmt in months now..grrr katey lets go back to circle thos week if its warm (if u see this) the huge circles at hgatherings vcan be so powerfyul, driving the music that flows from every camp and kitchen up[ close the earth throbs with the beat it gets u high drug free just to be surrounded by that energy
i faked playing the trumpet in 4th grade, couldnt get the lips right. then i went to snare drum, then drum set until i was in 8th grade. then i was thrown into the marching band scene where i learned melodic percussion, marimba, xylophone, vibraphone. i played bass guitar for about a year, and i only sing when i cant hear my voice.
i have a djembe. I loooove hand drumming. I wanna get a nyabinghi drum. I can play some guitar and the flute. My favorite instrument is my voice....mostly in the shower. lol.
Callie being able to play by ear is a precious talent, you should be proud. I could never do that, nor was I any good at improvising. Anyone can learn to read music with a bit of patience and practice.
Well thanks Merrivale...tell that to my other guitard "now Callie play a diminished fifth with a dropped 7th and a blah blah blah." I have no ideal what the hell he is talking about half the time. I find my groove and it fits...and well if it dont...they have no choice but to follow me anyway...haaa haaaa!!!!!! Funny the trainwrecks when the bass player decides to show the guitards this and just drops out. I do think my solos would improve if I did take some lessons on theory, but I cant make myself sit and practice that stuff. Also I have been trying to learn Holy Wars (megadeth) for about a year now. If I could read music...would of been cake. Sitting down with the cd and constant rewinds is daunting!!!!
This is all I do. I have played guitar about 6 years now, man I can't believe it's been this long. I can't read a lick of music. I use my ear, just one as I'm deaf in the other , and focus on improvising. I seriously can't play music that doesn't allow me to improvise. I will never play the same song twice, it's blasphemy. I mean there is the basic song, chord progression, and melody. As long as you start at the foundation, the music can flow endlessly from one song to the next. Anyway, it's my love and passion. Right now I am focusing mostly on an acoustic sign/writer duo with heavy elements of improvising. I play lead guitar primarily for the duo but love to through down rhythms. I love rhythm in general. Over the past couple years my playing has become increasingly stylized and gaining complexity. But I agree totally with what SE said about the drum except for me that instrument was the guitar.
Callie I totally know what you mean about the diminished fifth dropped 7th frustrations. I have been forcing myself to learn theory gradually over the years and can only take it in very small strides. I know the basics but the advanced stuff eludes me. I know my keys, major/minor scales, some modes, and even chord theory. But it's extremely hard to apply these things to the guitar when I don't have the damn note memorized on the fretboard. I does me know good the drop the 7th, even if I knew what it was, if I can't find on the neck. I just take the basic theory and the advanced ear technique and hopefully make something come out.
I love jam bands!!!!!! Nothing like locking in on a groove and allowing it to take you where ever it chooses!!! However I have been playing for 18 months in a cover band ...shreeeeeek!!!! Sadly if you wanna be gigging in southwestern Va you gotta play the classics. If I have to play roadhouse blues one more time I will hang myself with my g string!!!!! I hate the doors now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
