The type of people that would just travel the country on a whim? I need advice for that type of lifestyle, because i don't know where i would even start.

Rainbow family these days and being on the road is a bit more rough and dangerous than it used to be. Be careful...
But yeah, see if you can find rainbow sites
    Best wishes

There are people traveling like that, but mostly by car, van, etc. because hitch-hiking isn't happening anymore. Can also get to a walking/public transpo kind of city, like San Francisco or Boston and kind of hang there. Boulder and Fort Collins are good. Several places in Washington and Oregon are hippie-friendly.

I was with about 150 hippies this weekend - 3 days of psychedelic awesomeness in woods and hills and dales.

Being a hippie is as much a state of mind as it is what they do. Not all hippies traveled around in a magic bus and got stoned every day or went to every music festival or went to every political protest. Many of us did some of these things, just not all the time.
