Not to disagree with you but to give another side. For me and those I knew it had nothing to do with protest, it was more about availability and not being a big deal one way or the other. It was a matter of being on the road, so you took baths or showers when you could and when you couldn't it just wasn't a big deal.
It was not a big deal. For those on the road for what ever reason they were on the road it was a matter of availability. I think there is a huge misconception of just what a hippy is. You didn't have to be on the road. You didn't have to live in a commune. You did not have to live in San Francisco. Hippy is what you make of it. Again there are no rules. It is an ideal. We did not all think the same way about everything. We were pulled together by certain ideals. Freedom. Coexistance with others. And peace. Plus many other things to many to list. Again hippies were a movement as much as anything. It was a try to change things. Are you a hippy ? Today it is a state of mind and no longer a movement.
