Does anyone pay for Windows software?
    I thought it was free!

As for av/malware, avoid porn and torrent sites and there isn't a problem.

  2. If you experiment a lot you need anti malware and antivirus. You will end up downloading shit that will make your computer stop turning on, seriously.

AVG and spybot work for me.

Yup, slow systems due to antivirus, I call them infected with the antivirus virus.

Much better to use common sense and backup your data, and image your C drive. Not with Microsoft's crappy recovery tools either. Something decent like AOMEI Backupper or Karen's Replicator.

If you use Windows, you must use antivirus. Downloaded versions are way better than store purchased crapware. I know from experience.
A while back I got a disk for a laptop, Windows 8.1 straight download. No crapware, only the necessary. And used my Norton disk. And my Word, etc. download disc.
Fast as a ten dollar whore. LoL. For a week, then It was fucked with viruses.
Next time I will get the online download virus protection. Lost $200. for a week's VERY f'n fast internet. And it was very very fast.

    IODE wrote, in relevant part:
"You should be running an antivirus, and only one."

    My response:
The reason you should run one, and only one antivirus is that they will fight with one another over control of your system, bogging it down to the point of uselessness, or locking it up altogether.

I haven't used an antivirus on any system of mine in over 10 years. I have a netbook with one of the last versions of Windows XP on it, and I shrunk that partition down and installed two others with linux & PCBSD on them. Once in a while I'll run CLAM Antivirus on it, which runs by booting the CD/DVD disk up, downloading any antivirus updates, and running the scanner. It scans everything, and takes a while, so I leave it alone when doing this.

I never use ANY antivirus that comes with any computer with Windows. They're all junk, in my opinion, which is why they're cheap enough to install on multiple systems by retailers. Most of these simply can't be trusted for a variety of reasons.

Here is my latest information I've used for treating any computer, and you may or may not be able to do all of this on your system due to operating system limitations:

Even if you can't do this, it's a good read and informative. Most problems can be solved by turning off ANYTHING that allows the net/web to access your system or wake it up on LAN. If you can't turn these off, your system can NEVER be fully secured, as far as I can tell.

    Enjoy.

Such a good thread! It is so hard to keep your pc safe these days, especially with the smart and diverse ways hackers try to infect our systems. :frowning:
We really have to step up our game, if we want to protect ourselves, and get informed of the most popular ways to spot a malware and prevent the damages it can cost! I guess, there are some good programs like Avira, Avast, etc that might be helpful. But we have to be careful with the sites we are browsing on and the programs we are downloading. One of the articles I came across recently helped me understand the different ways you can get affected with a virus and of course what you can do to prevent it from happening. I had a pretty bad experience with a spyware on my laptop, so now I definitely think twice before downloading programs or visiting links which I receive through e-mails!
Be smart guys! Learn from the mistakes of others:grimacing:

Free anti virus generally doesn't have the featured to get rid of a lot of the nasty viruses.

AVG free is always popular, I use it and never have a problem.

The only fucking virus that I've had to deal with in the past 4 years is Windows 10 Update service.

Learn to boot Linux from a USB-stick. Infecting a temporary live-session is damn near impossible. Even if it does happen, repairing the damage, at worst, is a simple matter of re-formatting the flash drive, and re-installing from a clean ISO. Takes all of 5 minutes. Antivirus programs today are invasive placebo.

Off An Alarm And Dumps The "Sus" Website.....Only Problem Is It Sometimes Blocks Me From

Websites That Do Not Have A Current Security Approval......:smilecat:
