My wife smoked all her life, now she has lung cancer, stage 4, and has already had brain surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. There's no possible way to express the pain, suffering, misery, terror our whole family is going through due to our society's acceptance of tobacco. It nearly breaks me down in tears to see someone with a cigarette now. I thought I had a clue about how bad cancer is, having lost both parents to it, but when it's your life partner, soulmate (really)... it's orders of magnitude worse and different (we all grow up knowing we'll probably see our parents die). I'm not in favor of an absolute ban on tobacco. But if you smoke, quit. If you can't quit, get into a program. If that doesn't work, get yourself into an inpatient program- yes, even if that means selling your house, cashing in everything you own, and borrowing yourself into hopeless debt. If you're a smoker, your odds of getting lung cancer alone are about one in eleven, and lung cancer is very nearly always fatal. If you smoke, please find a way to stop, or you will very likely be facing nightmares far worse than anything you've ever conjured up in your deepest, darkest moments.
Expect the 'smoking causes cancer' denialists to jump in on this thread. Smoking is good for you. It coats your lungs with tar and makes them nice and strong. .
OK. I bet organically grown tobacco without any additives is far less likely to make a body sick... I vote we all start growing it. And I don't even smoke tobacco. But I'd grow it for those who do. Guess I'll have to start next year tho 'cause it's a bit late to start the plants now and I don't even have seed.
You could always just take up the inhaling of nicotine and save everyone the pain of lung cancer and stench on your breath.
Ok, a few have said the taxes go for education. These are the people who believe everything they read. This bill was signed because Obammy lost so much money on his stimulus bill that he had to make that money back somewhere else, so in essence, this tax supports the stimulus, the money that was taken away from education. As for those who say you should stop smoking anyway because it causes cancer, I have known several people who lived past 90 and smoked all their life and died of old age, never got cancer. So I dont believe that. I believe that certain people have a gene that will eventually give them cancer, and nothing can be done about it. As for the Canadians, well, I am one myself living in the States, and I feel for you, but I am sure the taxes imposed on yer tabaccy helps to pay for the free health care you receive, which the US refuses to do. I mean, if they decided to do this and say in return we will give all citizens free health care, I would be jumping for joy over it. Anyway, they are getting away with this, and next it will be alcohol. I am sure glad I will kick the bucket soon enough, as this entire scenario is a load of crap. Never in the history of this country has one product more than doubled in price in 1 day, except for maybe 1 cent bubble gum.
I think that certain people are more susceptible to getting cancer than others, but that smoking tobacco still increases your chances of getting it. That's why some people, like George Burns, could smoke cigars all of their life and live to a hundred. My mother died of pneumonia because her lungs were fucked up from years of smoking. I remember hearing my mother coughing every morning to get out the phlegm. This was a daily routine, and she sometimes would have coughing fits when we went out to eat. It was very embarrassing for her and she suffered a lot because of it. I was really young when I saw this and I kept thinking to myself how upset I was that she was doing this to herself. She eventually locked herself in her room one day to quit because her mother told her, "You are going to die if you keep smoking. Your son isn't going to have a mother if you keep on doing this". So she finally quit, but it was too late... The damage accumulated. I respect people's right to choose to use these drugs, but I just wish people just stood away from these things.
I seconded this motion! All in favor of declaring that statement a very lawl/lol/lolz/lmao statement say aye AYE The ayes have it, the motion passes However, back to the taxes, now they're trying to put a 5 cent tax on every can of soda, combine this with the debate on whether foods and restaurants that use transfat should be subject to tax that's been going on for a while. I always said you're next fat people once they can't do anything else to smokers.
Well, in Canada the government pays for the majority of health procedures. So, they have a vested interest in curtail the burden on our health care system.
How do you all feel about the e-cigarette? http://www.usnews.com/blogs/risky-business/2009/04/16/possible-e-cigarette-ban.html
