Dang, I meant to put this in the HUMAN EVOLUTION thread. Oh well it kinda fits here too.

I should also point out that this is from The Secret Doctrine....I'm not trying to plagiarize.

That statement is real insight into human affinities. Human nature is animal nature whereas complex human behavior is not the behavior of a fox for example.

Another similar statement is a kind word turns away wrath or an apology eases anger or we find those most agreeable whom we agree with.

Some parts of the bible do seem like basic guidelines for psychopathic idiots. "here, memorize these anecdotes and try not to kill anyone". Then there's the contradictions, "well if God tells you to kill... you don't want to piss God off." Now let's not forget the most important subliminal message of the Christian faith... " Even if it turns out that voice in you head wasn't God telling you to kill, That's alright too, because Jesus died for your sins".

The Bible, it's everything you want it to be.

I agree within the boundaries of what it is. That is the bible cannot become a submarine. Being a book the bible is repository for symbols and symbols can be taken to mean anything. Taken as a book instead of a revered object it is much more comprehensible and it becomes easier to discuss in a sensible manner.

If we were to define god as the devotion we invoke or examine the human portion that we can identify experientially of the supposed god human relationship we could apprehend the experiential basis for those who say the bible is god's word. They say that the bible while being physically written by men was inspired by the spirit of god and they would be accurate given the above definition.

What makes the statement accurate is their agreement with it's value. When someone says that anyone is profound or silly they are reflecting on their own level of apprehension or perceived value. That is self is recognized by self.

As to those who say god speaks to them it is an extension of what we all say or experience when we proclaim anything speaking at the urging of our good cause or judgment. We all have a sense of rightness and sensations lead to symbolic representations. We might feel an urgent sense of important good cause and call it being inspired by god or inspired by good cause. Certainly the statement, Some parts of the bible do seem like basic guidelines for psychopathic idiots, is made because it represents an apparent truth. The apparent truth of that statement is another way of saying, the devil made them do it.

In synopsis if the bible can be taken to mean anything then it can be taken as informative as well as basic guidelines for psychopathic idiots and to apprehend the truth of human phenomena we need honor or meaningfully account for every perspective. I have met scant few irredeemably insane.

I was once a US Marine Infantryman and also a US Army Infantryman..so, you could say I was a psychopath created by the US government. My father was an abusive alcoholic who whipped and beat me continually over any and everything.. I solved all my problems by either screaming or fighting. No matter how much I tried over the years, I still responded the same way.

    B. F. Skinner had that theory. You could apply "Behaviourism" to a reading of the Bible as well, particularly Genesis or Ecclesiates. :(

    from wikipedia
A common misconception is that negative reinforcement is synonymous with punishment. This misconception is rather pervasive, and is commonly found in even scholarly accounts of Skinner and his contributions. To be clear, while positive reinforcement is the strengthening of behavior by the application of some event (e.g., praise after some behavior is performed), negative reinforcement is the strengthening of behavior by the removal or avoidance of some aversive event (e.g., opening and raising an umbrella over your head on a rainy day is reinforced by the cessation of rain falling on you).
Let your answer be yes or no but let your no be your yes also.
    or
Lead us not into temptation but (also) deliver us from evil.

Self denial is the improper use of denial.
