It seems from the first page that Ian as an adult regrets his decision to get them cut off.

What would you have done in his situation?

I would have risked keeping them. I mean, he loved flying, he had a pretty girl who liked him, and he could have been a millionaire. The only risk would be getting kidnapped by scientists and the government and studied for the rest of his life.
