Anyone else really actively oppose circumcision?

I am pretty sure this topic has been spoken around in circles throughout this thread.

Female circumcision, performed in a sterile, clean, safe environment, by doctors, with proper tools and access to medication if something went awry, might be comparable to male circumcision. But, unlike male foreskin removal, that is very rarely the case.

I certainly don't agree with female circumcision, since it is often done primitively, without proper tools or sanitation.

But, do I think the people who perform FGM on girls are evil/wrong/stupid? No. Would I expect to change their minds by presenting them with research from a single Dr.? Nope. My point: Nothing exists in a vacuum. Your view on genital altering seems to ignore this fact.

But some things are just wrong. If a religion/culture existed that thought it was ok to murder children or sexually abuse them or whatever, I don't give a crap about their culture or religion - it's WRONG. It's just wrong.

I have studied Anthropology for years and I have a passion for cultural diversity and theology, and love to learn about different people around the world and their customs. It's fascinating and wonderful to me.

But, I am not going to stand idly by while anybody, anywhere commits heinous acts claiming it's their religious or cultural right. Sorry, it's just not going to happen, not if I have any say in it.

Abuse and child mutilation and these terrible things are just wrong. There's cultural sensitivity, and then there's condoning crimes against people's basic human rights.

It's not about culture, it's not about religion. It's about basic human rights and protecting other people.

I guess I don't know what I'm missing, but on the other hand I've still been able to function perfectly and I can't see the point of getting upset about it.

I just really feel for all the innocent children who have this happen to their natural bodies when they're too young to protest.

And I know that if anything similar were being done to baby girls, there would be uproar.

But who cares about boys, eh?

Thank God for the anti-misandry movement :)

Hoppi. What would you do if they tried to take the baby's urine?

Thankfully though, circumcision (of both genders I think) does seem to me to be declining globally and has been for some time. Maybe a lot of this is simple patience :)

I'm circumsised, and I gotta say that there is nothing mutilated about my penis. I think it's great and many would agree. And under no circumstances would I ever want more sensitivity than I have now. It would be uncomfortable and there's nothing appealing about premature ejaculation.

It's totally cool if people want it done to themselves after 18. :)

    I didn't say ONLY at 18... xD

Not necessarily while you're cutting the cake or whatever lol

I just think that only when 18+ can somebody really make a decision about something like that, because they have a far greater awareness of their own bodies, can do research if they wish, etc.

How can a 12 year old, for example, really understand that kind of decision?

Having said all that, I think that waiting until somebody can at least give consent in some form (whatever age that might be) whilst still a minor is of course better than doing it whilst they are only an infant.

But in the same way a child cannot consent to sex, surely they also cannot consent to having portions of their sexual organs removed? Surely only in absolute emergencies should this be done, in the same way that any other part of a child's body would only be removed in an absolute emergency.

your right we should wait for the children to tell us what they want done. if i ever have kids im waiting for him to tell me if he wants to be immunized. if he gets small pox as a baby well it was his fault for not telling me. i dont think that will be a concern though because until he tells me what food he wants im not giving him anything. its his body who am i to force upon him what i want. and those people that dress their kids in silly outfits, my boy will have none of that. he will wear what he wants to wear and nothing else.

pensfan13 - Are you really so indoctrinated that you really think male genital mutilation is the same thing as clothing or immunisation?

What about female genital mutilation? That's fine too?

Did you bother to watch that video?

Are you unhappy about your circumsition...why? Bad sex? What makes you think it wouuld be different?

Speaking as a person with a vagina...female circumsition is totaly different to male ...

Did you actualy study that at all?

So you get that wrinkly skin removed and it help you stay clean!

But me..i get my clit ripped out, and my lady stitched up, erm...why are you so bothered?

Comparing female genital mutilation to male genital mutilation is to miss the nuances of both. You'd best just be satisfied they don't make unwilling eunuchs anymore, man. Least not in civilized society

morrow - I have a foreskin, I was born in the UK where - like most of the world - it is not practiced. Only 30% of the men in this world have had this done to them and it's dropping all the time AFAIK.

Did you watch the video? Also, FGM can be done to varying degrees, like MGM.

Anyway, I might just discuss this on the anti-misandry community now, that seems more appropriate than on here. I've learned it's another one of these topics that can cause conflict and problems when brought up arbitrarily.

Could this now be locked? :)

I would advise anyone considering doing this to their child to do the research. Research it objectively, do not be swayed by culture (or religion either) and remember you are considering cutting parts of your child's natural body off. Read what people have said, read the studies, watch the scientifically-accurate videos and make the right decision for your children :)
