I think there is a creative force but I don't think it has an identity like a person. By worshipping nature you give thanks to the creator just like I do I guess. I do not feel like I am worshipping anything. I just feel blessed that I can observe all this life and existence in general... which indeed would not be possible if the laws of science weren't there to make our earth spin around daily and keep us neat in a circle around the sun every year.

i wouldn't call it worship, that seems too harsh of a word. appreciate seems more along the right lines.

I agree with what Autophobe2e says. I don't believe in God, but I don't like to call myself an athiest because I'm not here to 'unconvert' religious people. I respect other people's beliefs, as long as they in turn respect mine. I don't think there's anything wrong with being religious, as long as you don't try to involve people who don't want to be involved, or see yourself as superior to non-religious people.

In Britain, where I live, it's quite easy to be an athiest, especially if you live in a city, because although Britain has an official religion (the Church of England and the Church of Scotland), in practice Britain is a fairly secular country: for most people, religion isn't very important. I think in America it's very different, especially in the south, where people come under much more pressure to believe. I can well imagine it's difficult to be an athiest there.

I don't like those athiests who use science as a weapon against religion, because science and religion aren't opposed. Plenty of scientists are religious: they are two very different ways of thinking, but they are perfectly compatible. Science hasn't 'proved' that there is no god, it has just improved our understanding of the world generally. And there is far more to religion than the first two chapters of Genesis, which is what too many athiests spend far too much time banging on about.

I used to be shy about talking about most of the things I believe, especially atheism. Society has a way of being very narrow-minded like that. Now I've come to the conclusion that if society thinks the things I do are wrong, I just don't care 'cause I'm not doing anything wrong by smoking or being an atheist or what-have-you, and just looking for people who are open-minded. A lot easier said than done, honestly :(

I work with alot of very religious whackadoodles ( they have heated debates about where the garden of eden was and discuss the lives of adam and eve like they were real historical figures) and know they would probably stop talking to me and avoid me If I told them I think they are certified lunatics that shouldn't be allowed shoe laces and need some serious medication.

I just smile and nod in order to keep a happy work place.

I'm glad you mentioned gays and lesbians because for some reason; one that I've not had the courage to investigate (lol) I find myself associating with the struggles of the lesbians and gays. its as much a taboo to be an atheist as it is to be homosexual on this planet and i don't think its a coincidence. both groups are alienated by the same majority; a planet inhabited predominantly by a group who condemns them both.
