I'm a semi-closeted bisexual. In other words I don't tell my friends about my homosexual side because

    A. It's none of their business
    B. I'm not in any relationship so theres nothing much to hide
    C. It is completely irrelevant to our platonic friendship

But a couple of my friends will toss around the word faggot for everything. THEY ARE NOT OVERTLY HOMOPHOBIC ABOUT IT which is why I don't know why its not a huge deal BUT

Is anyone else tired of hearing it; of hearing "look at that faggot on a bike" or "look at that faggot who just cut me off" etc etc

Does anyone else get tired of the repetitious, childish, and unimaginative word being used to describe everything from cloths to a shitty professional athlete?

Does anyone else sense the thinly veiled homophobia in the people using these words?

And while I'm on the topic what about everything being "gay."

Its not a big deal in the scheme of things and I'm certainly not saying censorship is the answer and I know I don't have the right to be not offended.

But is it really ok to toss such words around so freely when homosexuals are still killing themselves because its easier than coming out to their friends/family (in their mind.)

To me its not the words themselves but the implication they give that homosexuality is not ok but that is just my opinion. What do you think?

I'm a semi-closeted bisexual myself, (all my closest friends know, none of my family, but I believe just as you do, my sexual preferences are none of their business and I'm not in a homosexual relationship to hide), but honestly, the only reason using words that have negative connotations in the bisexual and homosexual community offends me is because I do know people who find these words hurtful. I don't like the word "faggot" because it's just always seemed like such a mean thing to call anyone. I don't necessarily like when people say something is "gay" to mean it's stupid for obvious reasons. But I don't personally get offended because I don't associate myself with those words. I am not stupid and I am not a "faggot" so I just don't let those words get to me.

In my opinion the word faggot is used by people who wanna be derogatory, pejorative?
I would never call anyone faggot.,i would not even call anyone gay, lesbian,bi or transgender...
it's up to these people themselves HOW they face and feel their sexuality..and it's nobody else's business...that's how I think about this...

In the past I've had friends that use the word "faggot" on a near hourly basis. Most of them hadn't a single hateful bone in their body and simply used the word in the same vein that others choose to use "motherfucker".. I doubt most of them are picturing male on male action whenever they say the word.

As for it being "ok". Why the hell not? I don't find the word attractive and wouldn't use it myself, nor do I care about a persons sexual preferences. However, it can be looked at in a number of ways... One, there are people who use the word in place of "dick", "asshole", "son of a bitch", and the sort... And two, others that truly hate gays (perhaps there are millions of other subgroups, but let's not get distracted). As for the ones that choose to use the word in place of another low-brow insult, who cares? Expecting more out of someone that thinks using the word "faggot" as an insult is a lost cause. As for those that hate gays, is this right? No, but censoring them will accomplish nothing.

I would suggest that if it is close friends you tell them that the word is offensive to you. They may not even realize how often they are saying it.

I have never used the word regularly, and I don't think much about it. As far a can see, whatever you are trying to say, there are certainly better ways to say it. The word sounds hateful and juvenile, but a lot of people don't mean it that way, and I try not to police others' speech.

This x1000, and for the sake of a future that includes all of humanity living together in harmony, stop being so easily offended, especially by something so silly as a word that's had its definition has been ever so slightly twisted.

I am 100% pro freedom of speach and wouldn't want any word banned or censored. I also understand how it needn't be taken as offensive as a couple people pointed out. And, no, I have no right to never be offended and ultimately its my fault if I let myself be offended especially if I don't speak up.

Still I believe words can be more poweful than people realize. I never liked the term "politically correct" because it has nothing to do with politics or being "correct."

I think more people would except the notion of speaking with more awareness if instead of calling it "PC" and making it a political issue we simply called it "not being unnecesarily douchy."

    Yes.

It's not even the fact that it offends people for me. Just that it's, like you said unintelligent and unimaginative. If you're gonna walk around insulting people, at least do it with a top hat on. Y'know? Show some class.

Faggot, around here at least, anymore doesn't even mean gay. It's just a derogatory term.
