I'm having one hell of a time staying focused today. I'm supposed to be figuring out my "paycheck" and I start looking at the numbers and keep saying fuck it! It's now 4 pm and I haven't gotten any closer to paying myself. Small business owner problems.

I don't know if its because its Monday or if I have A.D.D. Is anybody else having a problem staying focused today...or any day for that matter?

    YES. Today is the worst.
It's 23:13, and I still have an essay to finish.
But my brain is not working at all.

I've got a massive, gigantic case of ADD. But I don't believe it should be called a "disorder".

You just need to figure out how your mind works. You can do a hyponosis type thing. But I think its better to actually flit between things sometimes. Or have a TV on in the background, something like that.

ADD people would often make shit accountants or computer programmers. But they can be well suited to business and stuff.

If you notice, TV programmes often flit between 6 or 8 topics over half an hour. They're actually recognising how many people's brains work.

I also think part of ADD is your brain telling you to do something like exercise rather than sitting at a desk. Sort of health factors trying to override other ones. So sometimes, I'll do a few exercises every half hour or whatever.

This happens to me a lot. It's like your eyes and the paper are magnets that repel each other. Your brain just screams NO!

When this happens to me I just stop what I am doing and take a break. Or do it tomorrow.

It happens sometimes and when it does I tend to leave what I am attempting to do and take a break from it. After a bit of time and redirection of energy and frustration I go back to it and accomplish what I need to.

I wasn't made to work at a desk. I could NEVER have a desk job. I'm more of a visual person. I have to be doing something with my hands and I need instant gratification. That's why I do hair. With every client, I get to see the outcome instantly and I get to do different things all the time. That's what keeps my attention.

For me to sit down and go through what I've made and figure out my paycheck is like hell on earth. I hate having to focus on something like that. It actually doesn't take very long to do if I can keep focused on it. By the way, I finished it. I've been paid. My husband will be happy.

I've just been sitting here like "focus on the numbers, oh a text message, numbers, look I have an email, numbers, why didn't I got to vegas today?, numbers, look up a picture of a lion? why the fuck not?, numbers, I have to pee, numbers, what song is on, numbers, why aren't the lights in the hallway on, numbers" Seriously, that has been my head all day long! When I actually sat down and did it, it only took me about 10 minutes tops to get it done.

I'm a bit relieved to say that I have never been in a position where I put off a significant assignment until the day before it was due. I like to finish it a few days early and let the information "rest." It would stress me out to have to complete the assignment, reread it, edit it...etc...all in one day! Never understood how so many college students did that.

One of the many reasons I didn't go to college. I would have NEVER done my assignments on time.....or go to class.

PM me if you are really interested :). I'm pursuing graduate studies at the moment.

Really? I know that it is not for everyone. I honestly love school, and while it might be frustrating at times, I never tire of learning. I also paid for my education, so I couldn't imagine wasting my money skipping class lol.

I love learning. I take extra classes for my job all the time. Beyond what I have to take to keep my license. I never get tired of learning. I just know that I don't have whatever it takes to sit in a big auditorium and listen to someone speak for hours on a daily basis. I'm more of a hands on learner. Beauty school was perfect for me. 1 hour of class in the morning then hands on the rest of the day.

Cosmetology school is based on hours. In Iowa you have to complete 2100 hours of school. They give you 14-16 months to complete that many hours. At my school each week there were "optional" hours you could go to get your hours done earlier. I was there every hour I could be. I was in school 46 hours a week then had a 30 hour a week part time job. I had no problem doing that because I was physically doing something. I couldn't have done that if it were classroom work all day long.

Yes, learning is certainly not confined to a classroom. Or cosmetology school! Or anywhere else for that matter. Learning is confined only to the mind and the limits of the learner.

A good friend of mine went to cosmetology school, and it went very well for her, too. In fact, I was often a subject of her learning (lol). Aside from the fact that my hair crunched off when I tried to brush it later, I would say she turned out to be an excellent stylist. A close family member used to teach at a cosmetology school, as well.

I liked the environment there, but felt that most people were very obsessed with the way they looked. In fact, they got points deducted from their grade is their hair and makeup wasn't done. Other than that, being there made me want to go to hair school, haha!

I'm not sure how my husband would feel about taking on another wife. I think one wife in this relationship is enough :)

i occasionally have a hard time focusing on something i don't particularly care about. mostly if i have a lot of shit i need to get done though, not so much the "oh look at this shiny thing" variety.

so, you would say you have AD.

i was ALWAYS in that position. not that i minded; school was always easy for me, so i just half-assed most everything and never had to worry about it. i didn't become an actual decent student until grad school.

even in grad school, i could probably have gotten away with half-assing. i just finally cared at that point. but there was one time that i somehow had the deadline wrong for a 12 page research paper worth something like 40% of our grade, so i managed to bust that out from start to finish in 10 hours, and still got an A.

Well I can give MORE attention. Just spread over lots of different things.. :D

The other pt in all this is that our learning skills are basically still back in the Dark Ages. Schools were invented to have people be compliant for menial work. And many teachers don't wanna see their class do better than they did.

Now, I didn't say I never half-assed anything. I just hate half-assing at the last minute. I almost always do what you did, bang out papers in one huge lump of time.

Actually, in high school I had mastered the art of slacking. I would complete assignments while the teacher was going around to check them. But we all know high school was a joke. I can't believe how easy it really was. Standards were so low. I slacked halfway through college, too. I just got my work out of the way early to maximize my slacking time :sunny:.
