I own and have owned businesses. My story is that I don't want to work for a boss.

    You own a business?

What kind? And I understand that sentiment, although for the the first time in my life I don't mind working for my current owners at all. But the fact is I'm paid very well and still making them 70% more than they pay me. Plus I can't do what I really want to do for a living with this company.

Officially, as in government-registered, I operate some web businesses. Unofficially I muck around and do some trading and bitcoin mining.

That's cool, if you can make that work I'm sure that offers good freedom to live the way you want.

What I'm talking about though involves overhead and payroll and all that stuff. I have it all lined up just a big leap to take.

No payroll and little overhead, which is the way I prefer it.
Almost every single person thinks about starting their own business, but only very little people actually dare to take the step and do it.
If you really want to leave the security of a monthly paycheck, just say fuck it and go for it.

I work on 100% commission anyway so there is no security doing what I do, except my assets and savings that have come from it. I will definitely own my own business, my dad's an entrepreneur it is in my blood. It's just a matter of when. I have some good shit lined up right now, just don't know if it is the right time.

According to some, it is never the right time. According to others, it always is. As long as you are either good at what you do, cheap or filling a gap in the market.
What kind of business is it you want to start up?

I own 40 hectares of rice fields as well as 2 rice mills and a warehouse in the Philippines.

i also have 6 western unions.

My wife manages it all while I still have a 9-5 job to raise capital to expand my empire. planning on retiring in 5 years at the ripe old age of 37.

Custom rods, mostly period correct pre-1960s. But I'd also do retrofits, late model customs, bikes, it doesn't completely matter. I just love building custom machines.

And I'm not talking rat rods. Full out craftmanship, $100k+ per client. I'm really good at what I do, so to get there the jump off would be repair work of late models to keep the lights on (what I'm doing now).. Fact is even doing that the technology is so insane, new cars have on average 5-15 computers, or modules, that communicate across a high speed network.. if you know your shit you can get rich working for yourself and very comfortable working for someone else. But my true passion lies in custom fabrication, it's art and your canvas is metal.

I could get it started full time within a year or two. Already have a warehouse I'm thinking about going for, but with the state of my country I'm not sure if I should take that leap this second. My main colleague/business partner is pushing it hard and I can't not think about what I have to lose if it takes longer to grow than we want. But then again if you do what you love, does it really matter?

Just curious if anyone here has put everything on the line to pursue a dream before.

Someone told me when I was young, work smart not hard.

That seems very smart what you are doing. I didn't listen to them haha, taking the blood, sweat, tears and punk rock route. I probably would have a wife if it weren't for my path in life. Can't even tell you how many females I've lost because of my occupation, they just don't get it I guess. Fuck it she's out there.

When you say 6 western unions what exactly does that mean? I'd like to diversify and have multiple income streams too at some point.

Good luck with that, but be careful to start anything with a friend. Usually running a business together is not good for friendship. Same goes for family.

Thanks and I agree, but we met at work and more 'professional' friends than actual friends. We just vibe out and it's pretty fucking dynamic. Insane actually. I'll be the one coming up with the startup capital so I'll be the 'owner'.. but I wouldn't ever forget how vital he is to the whole concept and consider him a partner and make sure he is well taken care of.

I learned long ago (as an employee of many shitty bosses), treat your employees like humans you value and not a machine or commodity and everything is better for everyone. Also better productivity and work product.

Speak up mang, I don't give a fuck if you don't like me. You seem reasonably intelligent talk to me about small businesses. Specialized industry or not, certain concepts apply to all ventures.

I used to have a business that sold spareparts for drilling rigs and mining equipment. Didn't work out due to the lack of financing. Now I just invest and trade in stocks besides my 9-6 job.
