Think about people who believe the Earth is flat, Elvis is alive and well in Cuba or that Santa Claus really exists (except they are 40).

What measure of politenes can sugarcoat what you really think about those assertions? This is a thread about atheism. You don't see me going into the Christian forum doling out opinions, do you? If you're going to be offended by people who think theism is pathetic and don't feel they owe you an explanation for openly saying so, I would suggest you never enter an atheist thread.

Lol I used to be an atheist.... And you dont have to be polite about it... Just be blunt and know that we share faith.

I just wanted to know what what you believed, if anything at all.

Sorry for asking, ill be sure to remember that you hate being asked questions.

To be fair a forum is often called a discussion board. It seems logical to ask for an elaboration if someone makes an intriguing statement that (at least to the other person) raises more questions than answers things. You're right that you don't HAVE to expand on what you said but to say this is an atheist thread so prepared to be disrespected if you're a theist and don't want to be called pathetic is not right. In fact, that's what I would call pathetic. And no, I'm not just calling your pathetic because your atheist (but because how you handle a (possibly interesting) convo on this subject;) :p

this is not observably provable. what is observable is that we surround ourselves with our artifacts sufficiently as to enable ourselves to imagine we are a different kind of thing. we are unique among the life forms of our planet in doing this, but the only thing proved by that, is that we have a much stronger compulsion to express ourselves creatively in concrete form.

I wish I had the option to edit my posts just a little bit longer (just for spelling errors though! I already see two in my last one) :p

There are some birds who make nests with colorful objects that they find and gather to attract mates.....Dung beatles collect, well, you know what....etc...I am sure there are other examples.....some animals do surround themselves with things that please them.....squirrels gather nuts for the winter, etc....It is all survival for them....each living animal has its own language and survival techniques, and some go beyond just surviving...Crows and dolphins play for instance.....
My point is that humans are not better than animals...just higher on the food chain.....
and give me an animal over most people any time!

They are who they are any given moment...period...it is honest.

as you say; it is a matter of degree, not of kind. a fairly large quantum leap of degree, but far more significant, is that it is not a difference of kind.

(and that reminds me of a song, if i can find it, the one about the honesty of animals and children, and which one ...something... you decide. you probably know the name of it more then i do)

This is a clip from Through the Wormhole, which I believe I've heard you mention you really enjoy ace_k. This clip shows that even by setting specific parameters on spoken language, that this researcher has found dolphins exhibit proper language. I think Mckenna would likely suggest that language isn't bound to this alone but it's interesting regardless.

Dolphins and potentially elephants/chimps are capable of understanding language syntax

Many animals have a language of their own, sometimes they're even more sophisticated than the human language. Ants and octopus, for example, have a very complex way to communicate with each other, using hormones or smells and gestures (and for the octopus add to that the coloring and patterns on their skins), and it's been proven they definetely have a syntax to their language.
