i want someone to suprise me with a puggle...i would be happy. i think pets are great gifts as long as the person knows what you want! I got a golden retiever for my 10th b-day and he was a perfect gift.
Only if the person knows what u want AND that u'll be up to the task. This is a great problem, maybe u want a puggle but there are ppl who receive pets they don't want or don't want the responsibility. I'm sorry I'm in a pissy mood but ur speaking for yourself and comments like yours undermine the GRAVITY of the issue.
Maybe the FED should have control over pet ownership. No one has to have a pet that doesn't want one. That's bullshit. Those of us that choose to share our lives with animals doing it knowing, know the responsibility. Those of you that are too young, who had parents that took care of the pets, or those that just seek to market them as a commodity. Are dipshits. Those that view the new trends towards cross breeds have never owned a shelter pet. You are paying high fees for a mutt.....ha ha ha....the emperior not only has no clothes, he's just plain stupid.
Years ago the crossing of a lab with a poodle didn't result in a labradoodle, it resulted in a poodle that could never sell any offspring. Now you rich dumbshits are paying thousands for crossbreeds that are free at local shelters.
Puggle: Beagle, Pug cross, this is a mixed breed dog. You can go to your local shelter and find many that would fit your needs.
The thing is, those cats are a foreign species introduced into ecosystems where they do not belong. Feral cats living in the woods and fields can wreak havoc on an ecosystem that can't support them. Entire species have gone extinct in the past due to this sort of thing.
But how does that justify allowing one cause of the problem to persist? That's like saying "automobiles are not fully responsible for global warming, there are industrial wastes too" to justify driving dirty and fuel inefficient cars around.
Turning back the clock? Who said anything about that? I'm talking about getting rid of the stray dog and cat problem, a current one. I didn't say anything about bringing old species back to life.
When you demand that all vehicle owners give up their rides, then talk to me about giving up the animals that are part of my family. Don't talk to me about production or lost costs. I know what the members of my family cost, and I am willing to meet that. You or no one or any government currently has the right to tell me I can't share my home with an animal. I don't live in China.
You want to take people's cars away from them start a new thread, I bet it would be enlightening. Probably a lot like the gun control threads. But guess what animal lovers are less adamant about their positions, but I'd rather face you with deadly force if you threatened my animals, then if you wanted my "gun".
Again, I've said if I had the power to liberate animals from domestication, I wouldn't. I wouldn't because I'm not entirely sure how that would effect our society. It would be an extremely radical method and I am radical in ideas only. I have too much common sense and reason to consider actually putting something like that into practice in 2007 (making the fantastic hypothetical assumption that I could). By the same token I can see the reasononing behind anarchy but I don't support a contemporary anarchistic movement. We're just not ready. What I am saying is that in my opinion these crazy PETA people do make some good points about the psychological damage a domesticated state can have on an animal species that is meant to exist in the wild, and to have its gene pool regulated by natural selection, free from pampering human hands. I think 150-200 years from now humans will look back at the way we've enslaved animals for our benefit and consider us barbarians.
you can't turn back the clock on the fact that they are simply domesticated. they are now an entirely new animal. they've evolved. though i'm sure you'd call it a devolution. but it's all the same in the end. it's something new and the earth will shudder a bit and deal with it.
Having domesticated animals does not mean that we should allow them to mate like crazy and then dump their offspring out into the wild so that they can damage ecosystems. Someone on this thread had it right. Spay or neuter. It's the responsible thing to do.
They're just animals. The guy down the street lets his dog run loose and it keeps crapping in my yeard. I told him if I catch it again I'm feeding it antifreeze.
sure. what're you going to do with those ones that are loose? what are you going to do with those country people who depend on "barn cats" (semi-feral) to protect their homes, crops and harvest from rodent infestations?
I was not making sweeping generalizations. All I was saying is that before pets are given away as gifts it should be made certain that the recipient wants the pet and is up to the task. This is what I said: "Only if the person knows what u want AND that u'll be up to the task." Don't u think it's rather foolish to just give pets away without determining these things, pet ownership is NOT trivial. If u don't believe me, read what an animal welfare group, Paw Rescue has to say about it. Why People Should Not Give Pets as Presents This is from a group that rescues animals. I know ppl who are very happy w/ their gift-pet but there were discussions well beforehand and the recipients still got to chose the pet. It's another situation when some1 who never dreams of a pet suddenly finds themselves in charge of a living, breathing being with emotions. Here's another one, the first paragraph says it all. pets as gifts It's more of a sweeping generalization is say otherwise.
