I was talking to a mate today about him wanting to travel America and a question came up which we're not certain of:

It's actually 46 states and 4 commonwealths,yes?
F'rinstance Massachusetts is a commonwealth.
So-does Federal Law apply equally in all states AND commonwealths?
As in-do the commonwealths have an 'opt-out' for certain laws,or some form of autonomy regarding federalism?

there are 50 us states. there are 48 contiguous states, then there's also alaska and hawaii to make 50. there are also some territories and protectorates. puerto rico fits into this category. I think there is talk that they will try to become a state.

I think that the commonwealth designation means nothing in practical terms. massachusetts is referred to as a commonwealth, but it is indeed a state.
