Just my personal feelings but what I remember about her was not good, and I remember how much
British citizens rejoiced at her passing...singing ding dong the witch is dead.

As noted, that's what they made it into in order to fool the people and hide their true motive. Worked!

There's always multiple sides to every story. Most people won't do diligent research prior to being assigned an opinion.

It didn't need research, you're alright, 'cos you're to'other side of the pond. Had you been here and lived through that period, you might have some better understanding of what some of us felt (and still feel) about that evil witch

And this is exactly why the current rash of iconoclasm is dangerous. We risk becoming ISIS or the Taliban, smashing anything that doesn't fit our narrow concept of the good. Jefferson was one of our country's his outstanding intellects of his era, and of all time. He was the author of our Declaration of Independence, which I hope also won't end on the scrap heap. And he was one of the ardent champions of separatiion of church and state, a phrase which he coined. Like others of his region and his time, he was a slave owner, but never an advocate of the institution. Condemning him for it is anachronistic. We might as well condemn most of the great Greek and Roman statesmen in history--to the detriment of our culture.

Thomas Jefferson inherited 135 slaves. He spoke out against slavery but thought that unconditional freedom would be worse for current slaves as they would have no means of support. He did free two trained men during his lifetime.
    He
In 1778 Jefferson lead in the banning of the importation of slaves into Virginia, one of the first bans so issued in the world.
In 1784 he proposed banning slavery in the new territories but it failed the Senate by one vote.
In 1807 he enticed Congress to ban the importation of slaves to the United States. He had been promoting the idea since 1770.
Yet he did profit from slavery. As I said nothing is as simple as it seems.
A statue to Jefferson is not the same as a statue to Robert E. Lee, who was a traitor and fought against the united States.

So the North caused the Civil War by its brutal trade restrictions and tariffs?
Slavery had nothing to do with it, slavery was just something incidental, without slavery the North would have forced the South to secede anyway due to the North's love of money and power....and the North's total disregard for human life.

The slaves had it good in the South till those nasty Northerners came along with their total disregard for human life.
Look how happy these folks is!

A confrontation erupted between protesters and a group of armed men who were trying to protect the statue of Juan de Oñate before protesters wrapped a chain around it and began tugging on it while chanting "tear it down." One protester repeatedly swung a pickax at the base of the statue.

Albuquerque, New Mexico — A man was shot Monday night as protesters in New Mexico's largest city tried to tear down a bronze statue of a Spanish conquistador outside the Albuquerque Museum

Moments later, a few gunshots could be heard down the street and people started yelling that someone had been shot.

New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrch tweeted that he's calling on the Justice Department to investigate the shooting. "This is not the first report of heavily armed civilian militias appearing at protests around New Mexico in recent weeks. These extremists cannot be allowed to silence peaceful protests or inflict violence," he said.

Sorry guys but its not a peaceful protest when you are destroying a museum.

    ------

"The August 1940 directive from Keitel that conveyed Hitler’s order to Army High Command also alluded to “individual instructions” communicated previously for the destruction of specific memorials; Furore Teutonico was presumably among those. Unlike these targeted acts, Keitel’s directive laid out a path for a more systematic and widespread alteration of memory. Army units in occupied districts were to be instructed to survey their area of operations, including museums, and document WWI memorials and displays. So-called hate monuments were to be eliminated"

Its police protecting the revenue and grimy tactics of that hated institution that's gotten so many people killed and brutalized by police.

Pull over detained stickers and papers check, we need you to step out of the car...... How many black lives has that claimed ?

Stickers and fees , expire and renew, massively over complicated never ending dirty grimy sneaky ass schemes to screw people and generate revenue all enforced by police.

Stupid ass kids, go disrupt an institution the public hates. Stupid fucks.

There is a long list of statues of royalty in the United Kingdom most of whom were likely racists ... Will the royalists allow these to be taken down too?

No statue was ever meant to be on permanent display.

Times change, people change, and attitudes change, and when tens of thousands of people rise up in protest and demand change,
I’d say this is the right time and the right place.

He was an activist pacifiist--the inventor of "satyagraha" (truth force) that became the model of peaceful civil disobedience used by Martin Luther King. Without Gandhi, would there have been a King? Without King would the Civil Rights Movement made the headway it did?

I know how difficult it is to accept being a victim of a misinformation campaign. And I get why you'd react by twisting everything up. It's a natural reaction and most if not all of us have taken similar things similarly.

Sez who?I say a mob taking it upon itself to smash statues on the theory that it has a special pipeline to the truth and "history" is a dangerous beast! Who will it be next? Jesus? For a minority to do this is tactically stupid. It invites backlash. As a Native American, I'm outraged at whatever assholes decapitated Columbus! When tens of thousands of people rise up in protest and demand change, we need to consider how many hundreds of thousands are not rising up and need to be persuaded. Mob rule is not the answer!

You are yourself a victim of a disinformation campaign of neo-confederate revisionists trying to whitewash their shabby history.
