Yes yes yes everyone. But this isn't why this thread came up again. I want everyone to be sad about the walruses with me.

All the CO2 that people breath out is already accounted for, it was removed from the food we eat by photosynthesis.

Hydrocarbons that were locked away before bacteria could degrade lignin are not accounted for.

Does breathing contribute to CO2 buildup in the atmosphere?

Maybe we could relocate a bunch of walruses and polar bears to the south pole. Seems like they could be thriving there!

Yeah. Maybe. But did you watch it, Asmo? I dunno I'm finding it hard to joke about. It's been on my mind since I watched it, and it hurts.

I didn't say that as a joke. The polar bear also needs ice and snow. There's gonna be less and less of it in their natural habitat (north pole), but there's plenty of it on the south pole and for a far longer time as it seems. So its a serious idea. Of course it would likely suck for certain penguin colonies but it could balance itself out. I really like polar bears (in the wild)...

Sadly many animals are not going to make it thought climate change. There are reptiles they are dying now since the temperature has changed a few degrees. So many people think that they will be fine since it's hotter and they like to be hot. It's not that simple. I always thought snakes and lizards were misunderstood and natural. So these are the animals I worry most about in climate change.

    That is disappointing, for sure.

The village shop where I live now takes the plastic punnets they sell mushrooms in back, and their supplier takes them and reuses them. That seems better than the type of recycling where they make new things. I'd like to see stuff like that done on a larger scale and return to using glass.

What do you feel about the walruses?

This is why we should use as less as possible, which is what I was arguing for. Especially disposable and primarily convenient uses of plastic.
If every person frequently buying plastic water bottles and a plastic bag at the supermarket would go with an alternative that clearly makes an impact. You were arguing otherwise.

And what if Australia did recycling completely wrong so far? Is that a reason to stop continuing and improving this? With the knowledge of it increasing and the impact it has? Only a moron, an apathic individual or a fatalist would argue that in seriousness.

Except for small produce bags, plastic grocery bags have been banned in our community. How long did it take to get used to paper or reusable? About as long as it took to enter this reply.

Here in the Netherlands they're still widely available unfortunately. They're only obliged to ask money for it (10 cents or so..) these days.
Where are you residing again granite? Sorry if I forgot! ;)

    Improving on nothing is easy

It is worse than nothing actually, because they got other countries to incinerate the plastic.

It was a 60 minutes report, there will be outrage for a week, then it will be forgotten, but still getting counties like Malaysia and Vietnam to burn the rubbish. No one wants to pay to build proper recycling facilities here.

China put a ban on waste imports, and what happened, Australia jusr sought out poorer countries rather than doing the right thing.

How is such waste handled in the Netherlands, rest if Europe? You sure its not the same. Are you SURE?

Tonight on british time 9 o' clock David Attenborough will explain on BBC1 in a pressing manner (as its a pressing issue) how bad we're as a whole doing, and that we should make an immediate and thorough change.

The BBC (no, not that kind VG! :grinning: ;)) expects a worldwide impact: a billion viewers is expected!
Attenborough hopes his message will have the same impact as his docs with Jacques Cousteau about whales (among other things ) had a few decades ago: the concerned audience acted on it in such a matter the whale population has restored :)

Here's some numbers he will confront us with:
96% of the mammals on earth these days are humans or animals kept by humans. The other 4% are all the other mammals living in the wild combined.. (from elephants, badgers and tigers to bats and so on).

    That's quite a disturbing stat.

Our over-population probably skews the percentage somewhat but definitely would be interested in checking out the special.

    Attenborough:

"Of all the birds on earth 70% is poultry, most of it chickens.
Nature used to determine how we live, now we determine how, or better said if, nature survives."

(translated out of dutch, that was translated out of english :p So give me a break if he worded it slightly differently ;) Message seems clear!)
