I think this view of British food came about during and shortly after the war, when rationing was in effect. Not only were choices limited, the amount was limited too. I remember hearing about a recipe for boiled bacon, which would probably have been the best alternative to fried for a family who had no lard for frying. Then when the Americans came over to England to help out (like a man with premature ejaculation, they came when it was halfway over), they were coming from a place where there was no need to ration. They saw things like women using gravy granules on their legs to make it look like they were wearing stockings. No wonder they think we're bloody crazy.
