Move over McKinley! Denali is here to stay! The people of Alaska have finally gotten official recognition of the federal government to return the original name after an everlasting political battle between the native Athabaskan tribe, the people of Alaska, and the politicians of Ohio (Pres. McKinley's home state). Denali translates to "the high one" in the Athabaskan language. I spent nearly a year in Alaska near Denali National park. All the locals referred to the mountain as Mt. Denali, whereas the tourists, official documents, and everyone else from the lower 48 all called it McKinley. I'm biased, but I think this is wonderful news and a huge victory for Alaska.
It never made any sense to begin with since McKinley was assassinated in office and never even visited Alaska Hotwater
Makes me wonder what Everest should be called. I also wonder how this will pan out politically since Ohio is usually a crucial state during presidential elections.
I don't know why Ohioans are acting all butthurt about this. It's not like their home state has plenty of lakes, rivers, parks, highways, or structures (no mountains though) they can rename to honor McKinley. Apparently Denali was changed to McKinley immediately after William McKinley was elected.
Why do they get butthurt about so many things? The state of Ohio once took North Carolina to court for honoring the Wright brothers on license plates and other stuff. Well, the first flight took place here. It's a fact. Nobody disputes the location. The site is a national park. Nobody was trying to say that they were born here or ever lived here. The feud went on for years. They urged people to boycott visiting NC.
now if only this could be done for every place that was renamed after some damd politician. i'm for it anyway. alaska should be part of canada though, and hawaii an indipendent nation. and of course it isn't just the u.s. that has pulled this kind of crap, not saying that it is. tibet should have never been part of china, nor sikkim part of india. but back to the subject at hand, i'm sure everyplace named after a politician, or any other human person, had some better and more sensible name first. or the parts of it did, if it had not previously been consolidated.
Really? That's dumb. Actually when Russia put Alaska up for sale they asked Canada if they wanted to buy it, Canada said No and USA said Hell Yeah! So I'd say it's USA's property all the way. However, the Kingdom of Hawaii was unjustifiably kidnapped by the UK and USA later on. I agree it's most likely every major river and land formation had a sensible name given to it by early civilizations long before a European explorer named it after a politician. The problem is those original ethnic names have been lost in history. I'm sure that the goal was to force the name Denali to be wiped away from history forever when they named it McKinley.
Phony "revolution" in Hawaii against Queen Liliuokalani and then the religious nuts and big biz took the place over. The only decent religious man was father Damian that lived with and took care of the folks afflicted with Hansens disease on Molokai. The rest of them stole whatever they could get their grubby mitts on. No surprise there. At least Hawaiian NAMES abide, if nothing else.
Captain Cook named them the Sandwich Islands and that name could have stuck forever. So it could've been worse.
as an ohioan, this is the first i've heard of this. i will admit i'm slightly annoyed, just because mount mckinley was the only mountain in the western US that i knew by name, and now i have to relearn it.
The Cherokee Indians in western NC can tell you all the names their ancestors used for all the big mountains and rivers around that area. Some of those names are still in use today, but most are too long and hard for English speakers to pronounce to ever catch on.
I signed a petition some time ago where the aim was to change the name of Custer National Park to Chief Crazy Horse National Park. I guess that it never happened, which is a real shame.

Many Ohioans don't seem to care much about this at all. It's mostly the bi-partisan politicians from that state who give a damn; Ohio republicans are being far more vocal about it though, but the democrats aren't happy either. Donald Trump is all pissed off about it too and he says he'd overturn the name change when he gets elected because it was an abuse of power by the Obama administration and an insult to Ohioans everywhere. Here's an idea Donald: if you wanna reverse any of Obama's executive actions, how about starting with real corrupt executive orders like NDAA and all Monsanto Protection Act?
