I know that. but Morrison Hotel and L.A. Woman weren't very psychedelic at all, I consider those two to be their best albums. The Doors, Strange Days, Waiting for the Sun and obviously The Soft Parade aren't very good at all when compared to pretty much everyone else who's been mentioned in this thread, and other bands of course. I hate it when I see those albums anywhere near the top of "best psychedelic album" lists, etc etc.. there was much better music being made by much better bands at the same time, they just never got as popular as The Doors..
No... their final two albums were all right, but Ray Manzarek's keyboards will prevent me from ever listening to them probably ever again. And Morrison/Krieger are some of the most overrated songwriters of the '60s..
I love both American and British. I was with The Beatles for four years straight, and then 'came back' over to America and discovered The Doors and have loved them for almost a year now....
British all the way. That's coz I have to agree with what others have said; the Doors were more blues than psychedelic. So with them out of the equation, the balance tips to the other side of the Atlantic.
Yeah, I actually enjoy them myself. If that makes me "mainstream" or something, I don't care. I, for some reason, have never been annoyed by them. *Shrugs*
I too enjoy the doors but i can't see why they're regarded as one of the best and are one of the most popular bands of the sixties. But you already know that, so let's not turn this interesting thread into another discussion about the Doors. Let's talk about our favourite british and american psych albums.
the doors keyboards are not really much different to the keyboards of the seeds or the strawberry alarm clock or even country joe and the fish. it just sounds like standard 60s pop keyboard playing to me. but yeah the doors are psychedelic but are very LA pop hollywood psych as opposed to the frisco stuff. but yeah the english stuff is on the whole more unique sounding. the best american psychedelic album is probably the grateful dead's anthem of the sun. and the best english is probably piper at the gates of dawn by pink floyd. but alot of people tend to nominate pink floyds second album coz of stuff like set the controls to the heart of the sun.
I only started really listening to the american psych fairly recently and I really dig most of the bands in that scene but the british stuff is better, more fun, more original and more diverse(incredible string band to pink floyd to donovan to the soft machine to tomorrow)
I'll agree that the best British psych album is probably The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but I would say that the best American psych album is (in my opinion) probably The 13th Floor Elevators' Easter Everywhere. Heh, 1967 was such a great year.
Thats what i like about this era. They were all good, because they didnt sound alike. They all had thier own unique style of playing music within the same general type of music.
A lot of people seem to get annoyed by it, but for some reason I never have. In fact, I still quite enjoy the sound. It makes the Elevators sound different from all other bands.
I totally agree, anthem of the sun is a fantastic "psychedelic" album. the term psychedelic is too generic though..........anyone who hasn't heard The Grateful Dead's album anthem of the sun should go buy it now! so strange that album is........songs like "alligator", "the other one", "new potato caboose", alot of great tracks, the album is mixed fairly well too considering it came out in 1968, live and studio sounds are mixed great.......... i'll talk more later, me tired...............
The fact was in england in the 60s drugs were not easy to get. forget pot . acid was limited. and only rich spoil kids could afford some . not related to this question . but i figure i mention it.
the rolling stones 66-73 the beatles 65-69 led zepellin 69-73 pink floyd 67-79 cream 66-69 the small faces 65-68 the who 65-75 etc (creation, action, the pretty things, moody blues, ten years after, blind faith, the family, the (new) animals, deep purple, the pink fairies, the yardbirds, kaleidoscope (aka fairfield parlour years), the faces, the zombies, Donovan, The Jeff Beck Group, Hawkwind, the Kinks, Black sabbath etc etc... how american can win...? In England we found probably the best band in the world...but the most part of unknow good band are mostly in america... so for me it's equal but we don't have to forget that the USA has 260 millions citizen and England only 50 millions...
