LOL @ "cheer". I've heard it pronounced that way lots of times, but I also hear it's pronounced "chayer" fairly often.

I find those hillbilly country accents and those typical heavy southern US accents quite charming. But perhaps its because I don't live in the US that I can see them apart from the other (negative) stereotypes that goes along with them.

For sure. You can watch Andy Griffith and laugh at Ernest T. Bass because you know he doesn't live close enough to shoot you or steal your TV. Not so funny to have him for a neighbor.

Uhmmm, you do realize that to the majority of the rest of the world, you guys sound pretty much the same.

So you pronounce your "I"'s and "E"'s a little different..

The best comment I ever heard about the australian accent involved wombat rapings.

Ernest T. Bass may just be the most twacked out person in Mayberry. Barney Fife is my favorite though. Did you ever notice Barney is the only one on the show with his own theme music? lol

To be fair: it seems not so funny to have Cheech and Chong as your neighbour(s) either. They are all just stereotypes ;)

Andy Griffith didn't want to insult his hometown by implying that Ernest T. could be from there (Mayberry = Mount Airy), so we were told that the character was originally from somewhere closer to the mountains. Most likely, from adjoining Carroll County, Virginia, or Wilkes County, NC - where moonshiners set up summer weekend races that evolved into NASCAR.

Notice the relationship between intelligence, education, and accent on the show? Andy Taylor is clearly the smartest person in town, and has the least extreme accent. Gomer Pyle and Ernest T. are at the opposite end of the scale from Andy. So it tends to be in reality, to this day.

That's why the whole accent issue is a sensitive one for many Southerners. Whenever somebody from the Northeast tells me I have a cute Southern accent, I always ask myself, is it too much? I try to keep it under tight control.

Every community has some people that nobody wants for neighbors. All stereotypes evolve from reality.

The whole country music culture makes me a little uncomfortable. Sometimes I worry that they're celebrating the wrong things. It would surely feel different to me if I lived someplace like Minnesota, where I could view Southern redneck culture as an alternative novelty sort of thing, instead of the dominant local culture for the stupidest people I know.

I'm the opposite. I embrace my southern accent. Though, I know it's not really a so-called "country" accent. There's just a certain drawl to the way I talk that makes it abundantly clear that I'm from the south, and I'm proud as fuck to be a Georgia Boy.

But yeah, I know what you're saying. I hate that people get stereotyped as being stupid just because of their accent, though I love the way they did it on The Andy Griffith Show. It shows the full spectrum of the "country" accent, all the way from charming to what can only be referred to as "hillbilly".

The feasibility of that depends on your job. I can't get by with it.

Video had me in tears, funny as, "Cos our dick is so low to the ground we have to brace it with an extra Joyce"

But I suppose you have to be easily amused by dick jokes

i had a landlord who looked like that. about three years ago now. well actually he was a live in manager.
never would put in wi-fi either. the owner eventually got rid of him and did.
other then having a lot of prejudice, he seemed to mostly mean well. he sure liked his beer though.

Welsh accents are quite pleasing to me. For 18 years I was married to a Welsh woman, and I have a few Welsh friends. Having lived in Wales in the past, I prefer it to England. Maybe one day I'll return there.

The Welsh language though is one that is very difficult to learn for non Welsh folk.
