It's so weird seeing that chick all...bikini-clad and whatnot. I remember when she was on my mom's soaps and she was like a 7 year old who had leukemia or something. lol
The justice system in Italy seems to be even more fucked up than it is in the US. Note to self: Stay the hell out of Italy!
Italy is excellent to visit, it is relatively easy to not come in contact with the justice system. If it's because you like to boycot countries which such justice systems I understand your note to self, although it does not really help the italian folks.
No, they have to straighten out their own problems. The Italian people deserve a better system. There's a lot to like about the country.
Aside from the personal risk of becoming the next Amanda Knox, declining tourism and international embarrassment may add motivation for making needed changes. I still can (and do) study the art, culture, and history of Italy (and enjoy the food!) from a distance. Like a lot of other countries, Italy is a lot better and more valuable and important than the political entity of the same name.
Uhm, isn't every country better than their political entity? Not sure I get your reasoning. It is not a more risky country than your own to visit. It now reads like you stay away from the country because you can enjoy it's history and culture from a distance anyway. We can always do that, but it's never quite the same as being there. I understand the boycotting idea, although I don't think it will help/serves any purpose. But it's acting on your principles.
Not so sure about that. Italy has contributed more to world culture than most countries, without a doubt. Greece and Egypt are two additional extreme examples. It depends on what part or parts of the US someone is considering. Nobody is going to bother you at the Grand Canyon.
I am considering in general. Some people can visit Naples for instance (not the savest city in Italy) and have no one bothering them either. I mean it's not a reason to stay away out of Italy. And I see what you mean about their historical influence and culture but I don't see why the fact you can study that at home is brought up here. I also thought you just ment the current political entity to be honest since that would seem more relevant.
I know exactly what you're saying. New Orleans is one of the most dangerous cities in America, but I feel safe there because I know where to go, when to go there, and how to act. To be a smart traveler, there is a lot to know, no matter what the destination.
Overall Italy is as save as most places in the US. So I guess your only reason to not go there would be to boycot them in order to send a message that most likely has no effect. Just to be clear, that is what I am exactly saying. I still am pondering what their political entity vs. historical/cultural influence got to do with it unfortunately. The amount of influence a certain's country history or culture has had does not make it better in my book. Not sure that's what you mean in regard to visiting/not visiting.
If you have closely followed the Amanda Knox case, then you know that jury members have stated that their opinions were influenced by Amanda's lack of sexual morals, in their view, because she had sex with her boyfriend. You and I could both become victims of this mentality, if accused of a crime there. Traditional Catholic jury members could say to each other, "You can't trust Dutch people, or believe anything they say. We know that many sinful things go on in Amsterdam!" This is not what a jury is supposed to care about. I do not want to subject myself to such a culture.
Highly hypothetical, but thanks for explaining. It would certainly not be a reason for me to not go but I understand.
I'm sure that's what Amanda Knox used to think. Pontential travelers to the US worry about similarly unlikely things.
