So I'm thinking about getting my amalgam fillings removed and replaced with modern composites. I hate the thought of those things beings inside me. I've had two in me for 15 years, probably from the health board. I was surprised to hear that my local dentist provides this service as I would have thought that only a specialist dentist would be prepared to do such a complex procedure. Several precautions have to be taking into account during such a procedure: such as ventilating the room, keeping the tooth under a constant spray of water to reduce the temperature so that less mercury will vaporize. It is up to a licensed dentist to make his/her own mind up on whether they want to put these measures in place. As my dentist doesn't do this on a regular basis, I can't picture her doing these to my level of satisfaction. So basically I am searching for a highly skilled dentist who can take these fillings out for me. Also: has anybody got this done?
Luckily I've only had a single cavity in my life, which was filled with a non-amalgam filling, but I highly recommend people get rid of amalgam fillings if they have them and can afford their removal.
I'm just nervous about the actual procedure of getting them out, because it needs to be done correctly to make sure that you're not exposed to too much mercury. And dentists don't like being questioned on their technique. They actually kind of get on the defensive!!
