So he made a few good melodies and was an amazing lyricist...So many others have done so much better, and have been far more consistent.

Ah very few have come close to Dylan's lyrically ability, from stream of the thought and surreal to the haunting and romantic. And while Dylan has made some shitty albums, considering how many he has theres bound to be some shitty ones. Dylan had made more albums that went down as legends by 1976 then most bands ever make period.

Once again, I don't care what the critics say. I consider the music to be more important than the lyrics. Lyrics tie music down to certain time perioids, which is why Dylan will be forgotten in 500 years, and Mozart will still be remembered.

I don't know about that, it's hard to say as there really hasn't been a long history of great singer-songwriters, but writers have been respected through the ages and Dylan has gone down as the most lyric writer of our time. There are actually some colleges that have classes that do nothing but examine Dylan lyrics. Plus like him or not the huge impact and influence Dylan has had on music will be with us for quite a while.

Not really, his work is mainly political statements mixed with baby, baby lyrics.

You really haven't listened to much Dylan have you? Most of his songs actually aren't political, though back in before he plugged in many were. I don't know how you can think of his lyrics as baby lyrics though

Baby, baby lyrics just mean Black Dog type stuff. Yeah, I have most of his albums actually, there are tons of political songs.

There are, but there also isn't, like Blood on the Tracks, that's one of his most respected albums and most of that album is about love in one way or another

c'mon, you can't say that about something like this:

Early one mornin' the sun was shinin',
    I was layin' in bed
Wond'rin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red.
Her folks they said our lives together
    Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
    Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough.
And I was standin' on the side of the road
    Rain fallin' on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues gettin' through,
    Tangled up in blue.

She was married when we first met
    Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam, I guess,
But I used a little too much force.
We drove that car as far as we could
    Abandoned it out West
Split up on a dark sad night
    Both agreeing it was best.
She turned around to look at me
    As I was walkin' away
I heard her say over my shoulder,
"We'll meet again someday on the avenue,"
    Tangled up in blue.

I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell.
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I happened to be employed
Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat
    Right outside of Delacroix.
But all the while I was alone
    The past was close behind,
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew
    Tangled up in blue.

She was workin' in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer,
I just kept lookin' at the side of her face
    In the spotlight so clear.
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same,
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, "Don't I know your name?"
I muttered somethin' underneath my breath,
She studied the lines on my face.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,
    Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello," she said
"You look like the silent type."
Then she opened up a book of poems
    And handed it to me
    Written by an Italian poet
    From the thirteenth century.
And every one of them words rang true
    And glowed like burnin' coal
    Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you,
    Tangled up in blue.

I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs,
There was music in the cafes at night
    And revolution in the air.
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died.
She had to sell everything she owned
    And froze up inside.
And when finally the bottom fell out
    I became withdrawn,
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew,
    Tangled up in blue.

So now I'm goin' back again,
I got to get to her somehow.
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now.
    Some are mathematicians
    Some are carpenter's wives.
Don't know how it all got started,
I don't know what they're doin' with their lives.
But me, I'm still on the road
    Headin' for another joint
We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view,
    Tangled up in blue.

Actually tin the song they split up, most of that album is about lost love, but still, there's only so many ways to tell a love story, it's how its presented. Take like Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands which he wrote for his wife Sara, and this one, Tomorrow is a Long Time, this is beautiful song

If today was not a crooked highway,
If tonight was not a crooked trail,
If tomorrow wasn't such a long time,
Then lonesome would mean nothing to you at all.
Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin',
And if I could only hear her heart a-softly poundin',
Yes and only if she was lyin' by me,
Then I'd lie in my bed once again.

I can't see my reflection in the water(s),
I can't speak the sounds that show no pain,
I can't hear the echo of my footsteps,
Or can't remember the sound of my own name.
Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin',
And if I could only hear her heart a-softly poundin',
Yes and only if she was lyin' by me,
Then I'd lie in my bed once again.

There's beauty in the silver, singin' river,
There's beauty in the rainbow in the sky,
But no one and nothing else can touch the beauty
That I remember in my true love's eyes.
Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin',
And if I could only hear her heart a-softly poundin',
Yes and only if she was lyin' by me,
Then I'd lie in my bed once again.

I know a lot of young teenagers who like dylan, i even know a 10 yearold who is in love with him but I agree, a lot of younger people can't get into his music.
I think hes awesome, but it was kind of disappointing when I saw him last November.
