The attraction of alcohol for me is the feeling of truly connecting with people. Sobriety for me is isolation; I'm a very shy, quiet person. When I talk to people while sober, I have multitudes of walls and preconceptions. Sometimes drinking can remove these and make you feel as you are really connecting with another. I love how alcohol makes my emotions so much more vibrant.
Is it healthy? Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes I can really connect with a person and the next morning feel as if the connection is still there. Occasionally it will get out of hand and you'll end up in the drunk tank or you'll spend the entire next day with a bad hangover brooding over how much of an ass you made yourself out to be.
Personally I can’t handle sobriety. I definitely see negative effects from drug use, but that doesn’t cancel out the positives. I love the herb, over the past 5 years it has become intrinsically part of my character. That’s just where I am right now, change is constant.
Alcohol can be an effective form of relaxing, like anything its how you manage it. I value you for being able to make the decision and stick with it; I value you even more for not pushing your ideals onto others. Ok, Peace.

I never have more than a few drinks, I was drunk once, hated it, I don't like losing control. I really don't see the appeal of binge drinking....

I enjoy drinking because it loosens you up. I find it relaxing to hang out with friends and have some drinks and even get crazy once in a while as long as you stay safe(no drunk driving). And what NitrousBum said about it making you forget about being less self-critical, im sure for a lot of people thats the appeal. And some of my buddies who are hard drinkers hate weed because they say it makes them too critical, they analyze every little thing they say while high and feel stupid about some things they say.

however, dont think you can imagine what the feeling of being drunk is like, if youve never been drunk. i really dont understand why anyone wouldnt at least try it once, so that they at least know what theyre opposing.

so far in almost a year, the only alchohol ive drank was someone else's, and ive found that it is still is really fun to be drunk.. but not as good as other drugs. as with cigarettes, i drink, but i never put my own money towards it

never had a sip, hit, or bite of any intoxicating substance and i think it's time to change that. alcohol is not high on my list of things to try, but i don't really know. i agree with bill in that i can't say never until i've tried it. so i think next weekend i'll give it a shot, if there's any good post-finals parties to attend.

I drink an occasional glass of wine, mead or (even more rarely) stronger stuff, however just one or two, and purely for the taste of it. I got drunk once when I was 22 or 23 or so, and what it did to me, well, nothing I wanted to repeat :) So I didn't :)

I like a glass of good wine with dinner when I go out to a restaurant or cook a special meal at home (like on holidays, not everyday stuff), mead's just very good, and there's just something about that one little glass of Ouzo (sp?) you get in a Greek restaurant...

But I don't want it to mess with my mind, nor do I use any other mind-altering substances in any quantity, I just don't like getting out of control. And I don't really need it to loosen up or anything, I do weird stuff if I want to and if anyone thinks I'm crazy or drunk, well people do think that sometimes. Their problem. At least being weird doesn't cause a headache :)

First off, I'd just like to say to Arlia that you are absolutely beautiful. But I digress. To the subject at hand, I don't drink either. My father is a very heavy drinker, so naturally I've seen the effects an ongoing addiction can have on a family. I've been to a few parties where there's been a lot of drinking, and it was all my close friends, as well as my girlfriend who I'm very close to. Needless to say, it really sucks seeing your friends have to resort to crawling just to get to a toilet to throw up in. And as for my girlfriend..... our relationship changed greatly after those few parties. For the better, I think, but you all aren't interested in that.

Maggie, I think that is awesome that you don't drink. I personally do drink, and to be honest, I'm drinking right now. I just want you to understand that I know where you're coming from, being the son of an alcoholic mother and having two sets of grandparents who have all been through various stages of alcoholism and other addictions as well. I commend you and I hope that you know how much you have contributed to my ever-growing faith in the goodness of people on this forum. You rock my music mama!

    Thanks,
    -Mac

Like everything else, drink doesn't suit some people, and I have to confess that I am one of them. In my younger days, I used often to drink to excess - it landed me in serious trouble on more than one occaision, and nearly killed me.
That was all long ago, and I count myself lucky to have been able to get off it.

These days, I avoid the stuff.

1 of my younger brother's will be 37 in April and he doesn't drink either. He goes different places with friends and is their designated driver whenever they go out. He doesn't mind being with his buddies while they drink...especially when he can bring his video camera to make movies of their foolish actions. Then couple weeks later when everyone is sober he'll invite them over for dinner and show them what they did.

ROTFLOL. I've done this. TO MY DH! ROTF! (Well, not during dinner with guests, anyway. The reason I did it was that he didn't beleive that getting drunk caused him to REALLY snore loudly, so I video taped him raising the rafters.....LOL. I've actually had to go sleep with my 5 year old dd some nights, when he really ties one on. Blech. In addition to the noise, you have Pretty Breath, Bear.)

Thanks, BlackDog. I have nothing against people who wanna drink a little, just wanted to know if I was alone. You are sweet! :)

I have also noticed, now that I am well into my 40s that the men have kept drinking, and most of the womyn don't. I don't know if it was from our pregnancies or what, but it seems like, at our age, the men get DRUNK and the womyn either don't drink at all, or have a glass of wine. Maybe it aggravates the Hot Flashes. LOL.

I think the people who say you don't drink are the only people I've ever heard say that! I don't drink and everyone I talk to does so they all think I am a looser because I don't...I'm not the one not knowing where I am and jacking off in the driveway at someones house in front of ALOT of people!!! (yes that happened to someone I know!)
