Alto sax, piano, any type of guitar you can imagine.. all but invisible ones, harmonica, and I want a harpsichord!

Oh yeah, and I don't consider "rap" by itself, music. Rap is commercialized 'poetry' set to a drum beat.

the reason there has been such a leap in the number of us guitar players is simple. back in they 70's and early 80's i believe, they didn't have much of any way of learning how to play other than from friends who played or takign lessons and doig the whole reading music deal. well, they invented tab...now everyone goes out and get's a squier starter pack and starts learning in that "learn how to play with so and so" book filled with tab transcriptions. i dunno, makes looking for a guitarist easy...but also overpopulates the world with worthless meathead shredders who think it all revolved around how fast you tap. tapping is fine but when every lick you play is 1 billion notes per measure...you have a disease.

i don't understand the " " aroudn poetry...i mean, it's still poetry wether it's about killing people and ridin through the hood on whatever kinda rims you got or classic poetry. these guys aren't talentless by any strecth...i sure as hell can't freestyle or "flow" and i really couldn't rap an already written song and sound cool doing it. and when it comes to beats, it's about some talent too...like having a good producer and shit like dr. dre and there is alot of talented DJ's and stuff for instance, i really dig this dj screw guy with all this screwed and chopped shit he does...i dunno i think i'm trying to say...it's not just abunch of black guys smoking up in a studio and rhyming...it deserves more credit than that.

tablature has been around since the renaissance

u would "shred" if u could but u dont have the necessary determination or brain power to put that much commitment into an instrument, or anything else for that matter. seeing as how u listen to primitively simian and practically non-musical beat talk bullshit aka rap, i can easily picture u as one of the little kids sitting in guitar center trying to play the tapping part in eruption on a bc rich and fucking up every 5 seconds

Kinda figures... When was the last time anyone ever had the blues in California.

There's no such thing as the silicon valley blues.

    1) I play all that shit too, plus invisible guitar

    2) What isnt commercialized 'poetry' set to some sort of a beat in America? All music is...personally i dont think people give rap enough credit. Sure, it isnt as hard as ripping a giant solo on an instrument, but it is a free way to express yourself and has almost more possiblities than any other type of music. Even if you dont listen to it, dont shut it out of your mind, open up your mind and at least appreciate the effort rappers have to give out to get where they are today.

Guitar is my weapon of choice, but I do many other things, as well. Lately, I've been playing alot of piano/keyboards and have gotten into writing songs that way. Sometimes, I get tired of the guitar.

Guitar simply has the most dominant and versatlite sound. With a good amplifier and fine pick-ups, you cab impress with little skills. Bass is more of a rythm-instrument that tradiotionally remains on the background. Drums are too much trouble for most people. The noise and the size of the instrument really drags its popularity down.

On a sidenote, I think the definition of music should be adjusted to prevent rap falling under it. Everytime I try to listen to it, I find myself more and more confused about what exactly I am hearing. To me, it has no real substance.

I wonder how many people thought the very same thing when they first heard those chaps you have in your sig? Or when they heard Jerry Lee bangin out "Great Balls O Fire"? Or Jimi? Or...

I haven't heard all rap, but I also haven't heard all Death Metal while I know it isn't my thing. When I ever hear a rap song that strikes me, I might go and find out more about its artist, and I might actually come to like him.

And I have to admit that Rock also appeared to be a barrier of sound when I first heard it, but the second time, I began to like it.

Maybe I'm one of those awful chaps that only like what they know.

Ah, that's your problem then. instead of waiting to hear a good song, go out and look for it! Have a chat with fans of it you know who know their stuff, ask them for recommendations of artists or individual songs - and that'll get you onto the musical equivalent of the paper-chase as one good song may well lead you to another. However if you just stick to what you're spoonfed by the commerical end of the industry, all you'll ever hear will be utter crap, and that goes for EVERY genre including your favourite ones, whichever they may be.

I wasn't suggesting that one like everything (or anything, for that matter). I was addressing the thought of excluding something from being considered music. Hell, I don't care for rap or hip-hop.;)

Yeah, same here, but when you've been playing guitar as long as I have (10 years) you start to long for other ways to express yourself, musically. Playing ONLY guitar all the time, gets a little boring.
