I'm digging through here and didn't really see anything really dedicated to alternative country and the jam grass scene which don't necessarily meld together but both are the red headed stepchild of their respective scenes. To start with ladies and gentlemen... John Prine and nothing says alternative country than this song which is a 180 form Okie from Muskogee where they don't take their trips on LSD

    What's a jam grass scene?

I like me some bluegrass, old stuff especially. Also some of the new alt-country rock bands coming out of America are real nice.

John Prine sounds a bit commercial to me, but not too much. I don't have much time for Billy Brown roadhouse country music.

Saying that I watched Dolly Parton on TV a couple of years ago when she played Glasto, and I was surprised at how good she was.

Jam grass, I'd say started really with New Grass Revival, Bad Livers I'd guess. Bela Fleck is pretty much a jazz banjoist. But today I'd say Yonder Mountain String Band, Jeff Austin Band, Greensky Bluegrass, Fruition, Infamous Stringdusters, Keller Williams when he goes bluegrass, Leftover Salmon and many many more.

John Prine singing about LSD in 1971 country music is about as alternative as you could be in country then.

Have you heard of the New Lost City Ramblers? ('50s and '60s)

They did old school bluegrass, and also Wildwood Weed.

Bluegrass and country always had an "alternative" wing.

(The Almanac Singers would be classed somewhere in Country.)

Old Crow rules the earth. No idea why that dope from Hootie and the blowfish decided it was a good idea to remake Wagon Wheel, what a disaster. Listen to some Crow and you will not be let down.
