I understand that this isnt a Q&A thread, but i have african textured hair, and i want to use a natural method, however ive been letting my hair go for a while and its knotting fairly nicely. Yet whenever i get it wet, it almost goes back to where it was. By washing your hair, do you mean using natural shampoo(i use olive oil/tea tree oil), or do you mean getting your hair wet in the shower?

I defintely use shampoo. Residue free is what is important! How often do you wash your hair? I understand that African hair differs in texture and oil than European hair, but I can't imagine that it's by very much. I was my hair once or twice a week, depending on how athletically active I've been.

The Rasta recommend washing your hair only with pure water, and the first set of locks I had that's what I did, never used soap or shampoo. They didn't smell bad, but they definitely smelled like... well, they smelled like white people, if that makes any sense.

i know alot of black people use wax, but i would perfer the natural route. I used wax for about 2 days, before i realized what i was doing. I washed it out with really hot water later that day. Now ive been just doing circles in my hair, and using natural shampoo and its knotting fairly nicely now. Also, some of the locks i se on black people seem to be twist rather than locks and i like the locks better.

shponglekay - just keep doing what you're doing! It'll take some time, it always does. If your hair doesn't tend toward being really really dry, you might want to cut down on the oil, because that might be adding slickness to your hair and causing the knots to come apart more. My hair is textured a lot like you say, (I'm like the whitest girl on the planet to have a real fro) and it locked up with no problem once I just liet it do it's thing. There's just a honeymoon period of trial and error while you figure out the best washing regime... :)
