Today is the eve of All Souls' Day. My mother (who was Polish) told me how my grandmother used to put out a linen, a candle and a prayer book at night. People do that today, but are told not to light the candle.

People also used to believe that this was actually the night the souls of the dead walked the earth, in search of comfort. You had to be asleep by midnight or you might see one. My mother told me as a little girl she almost peed her bed a couple of times, because she was afraid to leave. It also didn't help the candle and prayer book were before the bathroom (my mother said she was afraid she'd interrupt a spirit reading it).

Similar to the Day of the Dead in Mexican culture. Fascinating!
