its not cynical to recognize that these guys are marketing something for monetary gain which will then go to further their filmmaking careers. The situation in the Congo and in Uganda and in Sudan and various other parts of Africa is very, very complicated. I don't think its cynical to understand that some rich white kids sporting bracelets and funding documentaries is not going to change anything.
The problem is that the group "Invisible Children" are a little bit dubious... I advise everybody to read up on them. They might not be the most trustworthy people. However, Kony is still an asshole.
nice edit. I am an optimistic guy, but when I see how much money they are funneling into their own pockets and not into the cause, I start to question things. 90k salaries? only 32% is actually donated. Why do they call themselves a non profit group, when clearly they are anything but. but that makes me a damn hipster though. because I question things.
Part of the problem in Africa has its roots in colonialism, and nations around the world to this day continue to exploit the continent's resources and its people. We can only offer two things: 1) humanitarian aid. 2) getting our greedy hands out of Africa. I heard the Kardashian sisters jumped on this Kony 2012 bandwagon. Do you think they would be willing to give up all their bling? Would the entire western world be willing to forego the traditional diamond engagement ring and wedding ring, or is throwing $30 towards some filmmakers as far as everyone will go? Anything beyond humanitarian aid and boycotting industries that exploit African resources would involve direct military intervention, and like i said the situation is far too complicated for that. Almost as many people have died in the DRC conflict as died in WWII. Do you really think the UN and America can march into Africa and miraculously end a major war? Do you think western governments even want to? edit: I just wanted to add that awareness is good, I just don't like the marketing techniques that these guys are using. Awareness will lead to more humanitarian effort, more children growing up to join the peace corps and doctors without borders and other wonderful organizations that help the refugees and innocents caught in the middle of war.
I doubt if that money would go to the right place as well unfortunately. I would not help via this organisation either. Though you might consider it is a bad thing that nobody knew what's going on in Uganda etc. you can't blame people for getting enthuastic and spreading awareness once they've been notified by it (even only because it's via the easy way). Even if it serves little purpose at first and perhaps second instance.
Seriously, this seems like a major propaganda campaign to get people on board with a future military invasion of Uganda. That seems to be what they're getting at. Sorry folks, but this video is bullshit. That's not to say that this Kony character and the things he's doing are good. Just don't think any Western government would have good intentions in intervening. I guess George Soros is behind this, too. Go figure.
I understand what you are saying. I'm not saying that just because there will be kony posters all over the place on April 21 that all of a sudden africa will be fine and dandy. The way I see how this could potentially be a success lies in the solidarity of it all. Do you know why these militias end up being so powerful and why they end up getting away with doing such atrocious things? Because no one is watching, and no one cares. Now the paradox here is that it's not the individuals who don't care, it's the system. Ask anyone ''do you think what is going on in africa is ok?'' and they will answer no. But we can't drop everything and just go over there and do something. The powers that COULD do something are busy investing their forces in places that will bring them PROFITS (a.k.a. the middle east). ''It's complicated.'' Yeah obviously it's complicated. But these are freaking ghetto ass militias with children for soldiers, 0 training, machetes, and fucked up old weapons. Are you really trying to tell me that we can't clean that up? Gimme a break...
i hear that his army of kids has reduced by some large number like 80%. its a start and uganda has oil too..
that should fuckin tell you something.... are you going to pull the trigger on konys child body guards....do you want seal team 6 to go in there and murder children so that kony will fall?...o r do you want the murdering raping ugandan military to go in there...
Nobody's even attempting to back up their claims anymore. The claims about the money raise are probably inaccurate. http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12429 An 80% reduction of the LRA's use of child soldiers? The Second Congo Civil war has killed as many people as WW2?
I never said 80 was the exact percentage. and that link shows their 89000 dollar salaries down the page.
i think you need to seriously consider the consequences of US military intervention in a third world country to stop a bad guy. nobody is saying that Kony is a good guy, but i think everyone sharing this and advocating for 'taking out' Joseph Kony needs to do some research on the whole situation and really think through the consequences of what they're advocating for.
Haha I felt like a bit of an asshole last night because I had spent my whole evening debating this. Sorry. about that. Glad you could make it funny.:2thumbsup: I understand. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. I'm all for that. But I just feel like sometimes you have to choose the least of all evils. What are our options here really? Military intervention, continue to mediate negotiations that will never work, or nothing? I'd like to know seriously what you think should be done in this case...if you don't have an answer, that's fine, I understand. For myself, I simply CANT know about this and do nothing. This is a campaign that has real momentum, and I see it as a good thing. It's not guaranteed to work, and that's fine. I'm still very interested in seeing how it pans out. Everyone in the world is in the process of learning about this. I'm going to be sad if absolutely nothing happens.
I just watched this video and shared it with everyone I know. And I am sending the posters to be printed tomorrow and I fully intend on painting my town with this mans face. This could be YOUR children this is happening to...
