The show that I remember watching back in the 70's was and still is my all time fav. "All in The Family" is the best TV series to ever hit the airwaves IMO.

At the time, the early 70's, it pushed the envelope to the limits of network TV.

This is the ultimate classic TV. Nothing was like it at all. The first few original episodes had a disclaimer at the beginning which was also a first.

That was all before the politically correct era when America was liberal and vibrant and people were free to talk about controversial issues openly. Interesting times.

Today, the discussions never get to the issues. It's alway the tabloid fluff 'events surrounding the issue'. :)

Norman Lear was on CSPAN a couple years ago and discussed that show at length. It was nearly cancelled because it debuted in the spring and the ratings were poor. CBS gave it one more chance the following fall and it took off like a rocket.

Many spin-offs too, like Maude, Jeffersons, Good Times (the maid from Maude, Florida), etc. Even the smart-mouth maid from the Jeffersons had her own show for a while. :)

I really liked this show and I think to this day it still carries powerful messages. I also liked the spin-offs but I don't think they had the same oomph All in the Family had. Also I loved how dynamic and deep the characters were.

This is definitely my favorite TV show ever. I like other things like Will & Grace and Green Acres, but this show...I can't even explain the impact it has had on my life. I've grown up watching the re-runs and have learned so much from it. And isn't it ironic that Carroll O'Connor was EXTREMELY liberal? Rob Reiner said that Carroll was even more liberal than he was.

The first three seasons were really gold; the other seasons (minus the one where Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers left the show) were also great, but the first three years of the show were hilarious and touching. They seemed to tackle every issue and problem in the world.

When it's really late and no one else is awake I like to eat cereal and watch TV Land.

All I remember was the debate that raged on between my parents and my other relatives over the lyrics "Gee our old LaSalle ran great" no one could figure out what they were saying

Boy the way Glen Miller played
Songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us we had it made,
    Those were the days.
And you knew who you were then,
Girls were girls and men were men,
Mister we could use a man
    Like Herbert Hoover again.
    Didn't need no welfare state,
    Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee our old LaSalle ran great.
    Those were the days.

I always appreciated the fact that back then he was able to say the words; fag, negro, blacks, queers, gooks, and jews on tv. Today those words are seldom heard on television. Regardless of whether one feels they should be said on tv, at least back then people had the freedom to say it. The heavy hammer of censorship has since dropped.

My favorite episode is when Archie got arrested and ended up in a holding cell with a bunch of hippies from an anti-war rally. Regarding Jesus Christ Superstar: "I gotta hand it to youse kids, you take the son of God and make him look like Englebert What's-his-dink!"

Yea, it seems we've traded freedom of speech for sex appeal and flagrant stupidity for the masses.

"Don't feel much like thinking America? Well, grab a Coke and kick back, here's 300 channels of idiots with giant fake tits. Or are you a real man? Well then, here's 300 channels of fast moving vehicles."

One of my favorite Archie lines was always when Edith was bothering him, he'd go, "Ahh stifle it!"

There was one episode where Mike and Gloria were having an argument in the bedroom and Archie was in the next room with his ear in a glass up against the wall eavesdropping. Mike figured he was probably doing something like that and banged his fist on the wall. Archie's reaction: "Ah, jeeeezz!!!"
