A lot of bands were glam back in those days, so I don't think that is enough to say that they were in it just for the money. Anyways, I say Alice in Chains had just as much "heart" as Nirvana. Layne Staley lived a messed up life, you could feel his pain and anger for sure, and they had some great lyrics. I love to watch their Unplugged show, my favorite of the entire MTV series. Your favorite songwriter and musician of all time? No offense but wow, you must have low standards.
Odd thing about money, once Nevermind made it big did you know Kurt Cobain started to receive over 3/4 of the royalties since he was able to claim both writing a good chunk of the music and all the lyrics. I think they both have the same amount of heart though, especially because alot of AiC song's were about Layne and his problems, even songs like No Excuses which Jerry wrote were still about his troubled relationship with Layne and what heroin was doing to him.
i have nebver been that much into nirvana, layne gives me chills. to me he is undoubtly the grunge god. his lyrics is voice, they way he expresses himselve through the mic. if i would be a girl i would have been in love with him. AIC gets me crazy when i listen to them. i never think of AIC as an ex-glam band. you can't really say they went into it for the money either, their first album was released even before grunge was well known.
most people seem to be going with nirvana, but personally i like alice in chains a little bit more. still nirvana has a couple great songs, but AIC has more. to me Kurt is the better guitarist and as far as lyrics go...AIC is better by far. bleach is my favorite nirvana album and dirt is my favorite alice in chains album. i cant really choose between them. anywayy, i thought alice in chains was more metal than grunge. probably my favorite grunge band would be soundgarden. anyone else like them? haha woah sorry this is so long i'm really tired.
im gunna say alice in chains. weird coincidence i randomly listened to some alice in chains while i was smoking today and enjoyed that shit alot.
For the Nirvana lovers: VH1 Classic has Nirvana: Unplugged in NY on right now. You best believe I'm watching it
It definitly is awesome. I think they're tied, I think AiC's songs work better as unplugged songs, but Nirvana's songs were more unique unplugged. Also going with my signature, I think Hole's unplugged performances were really good
