Haha, went it comes to Alabama, I think most towns have a football problem. I don't do that scene well either, which is why I'm weary. I don't want to be just as isolate as I am here. I'm studying Women and Gender History, my other two colleges are U of Memphis and U of Louisville. But I haven't taken my GRE yet. We will see. Are you familiar with UA's Women's Center? It is the reason I'm interested in Alabama, it is my fall back. They have an amazing women studies program. The Vagina Monologues?
YES!!! i was a religious studies major & a few of my classes overlapped. i have heard aMaZiNg things about that dept. actually, one of my old professors ana schuber i think (who is/or was in the women's studies dept) was in the vagina monologues! & i've had a few male friends in the past that were studying in that dept also (i meant women's studies dept, not the vagina dept!) UA has an awesome art program & anthropology dept too. plus, new college is amazing as well! so don't get me wrong there are definately some alternative folks around these parts....i guess like most places in good ol' AL, we're all a bit underground!!! oh, something cool & new that's happening on campus - a student organization out of new college just started their own farmer's market. it's in the 2nd month & is doing great! checkout www.homegrownalabama.com there are probably other cool things going on that i am completely unaware of, as i graduated in 2003 but keep me posted if you do decide to come to town...we're always up for meeting new folks
Most towns in Alabama have a drinking problem AND a football problem. I'm proud of my drinking problem, but I'm also proud that I DO NOT have a football problem.
Hey to both of you from Decatur and everybody else!! I'll be moving back to bama next month from Colorado, and I can't wait!! I never thought I'd say it, but it just feels like home Hope to meet some of ya'll
Another Bama girl here. I am close to Gulf Shores....I would move in a heart beat....I grew~up here and I want to be a Texas girl.....Baldwin County is a very nice place I must say.....We have pretty much all we need here.....
Alabama is my home state. Many moons ago. Not a bad place to grow up, but in my day leaving was the best option for alternate thinkers. I did manage to shake George Wallace's hand once upon a time. My neck was never red enough to be happy there. Besides, I HATE hot weather. It's 61 outside as I write this, here in the coastal rainforest where I live now. Ya'll have my sympathy. x
I was drinking with some friends at a mall bar in Laurel, MD. When the bartender found out I was from Alabama he grabed me and headed for the door. I was thinking "WHAt the hell did I do?" As soon as we got outside he asked me if I kenw who George Wallace was. I said "Sure". He pointed to the sidewalk and informed me that it was where he was shot.
One of my best friends from my school days lives near there. He owns a recording studio and works as a guitarist for a local country act. x
I don't live in Alabama, but I'm very close. I'm In Chipley which is just about 15 miles south of the Alabama line. Looking to meet some other southern hippies.
ok this thread hasn't been posted to in a long time but I'm new here and would like to meet people from Alabama. I live in Birmingham, Irondale to be exact. I used to live in Tuscaloosa cause I went to school at UA. But I moved back to bham.
Hoover, checking in... I saw a few people from around the area post earlier in the thread, but that was a long time ago... anyone still around here?
I'll be moving to the Birmingham area from New Mexico sometime in September. I'll only be in AL for about 8 months, but I'm a bit nervous, being a northern boy (grew up in NH.) Would really like to hook up with some cool people in the area.
Hey 'Poor Old Dad', I know I'm a little late getting here, but I lived in Clanton for 22 years. I now live in Birmingham(Hoover/Inverness) but have a business in Clanton. Lived almost all my 58 years in Alabama(lived in Florida for a short time). I was a hippie back in da dayz, was at Alanta International Pop Festival and Celebration of Life. Used to spend time on the strip and Piedmont Park in Atlanta, late 60's, early 70's. No, this isn't the america we envisioned 40 years ago...Change? Yeah, there's been changes(heck, I've sure changed, no drugs...) but yet things still remain the same, people still searching for peace and love. I notice there are mostly young people on this forum, but it's good to see there are still a few older dudes still left...I don't know about you, but I never expected to make it to 30, much less 58...but life is good. Hollar if you still interested in making friends in the Chilton Co. area. War Eagle! btw: you don't happen to be a peach farmer, do you?
