From Birmingham, a stone throw away from Five Points South. This is the stomping ground of progressives with a radius of 4-5 kilometers. If you are in this part of Birmingham, you'd have hard time believing that you're smack in middle of Alabama. Its expensive living in this bohemian neighbourhood on a graduate student stipend, but I'd never dream of leaving the Five Points area as long as I am in Birmingham. Been in this city of 5 years now, but might have to move some place else for a job as I am finishing up my grad school in couple of months. Can't speak about the rest of place in AL, but Bham is quite a charming place to be - except in summertime.

That's pretty coincidental, as the Five Points area of Huntsville seems to be full of hippies as well. Lots of barefoot people tossing the hackie sack in the park and a lot of people with signs in their yards that read "STOP THE WAR" or "ABOLISH THE IRS". Really great place. Feels like a small town inside a city.

Yeah, I wasn't born in Alabama either, grew up here & managed to leave, then came back, left again, came back again, repeat, repeat, repeat, etc. There are worse places, I guess, can't think of any right now, but there probably are. Peace, poor_old_dad

Original 60's hippy living in bird sanctuary in Nova Scotia on Atlantic ocean. 5 labrador retrievers and a hippy wife. Originally from Mobile, Alabama. thinking about over-wintering there eventually when we can afford a second house there. Miss the south. Spent 60's in New York City's East Village, lived 3 blocks from the Fillmore East (now defunct). Used to trip out in Tompkins Square Park, paint our faces with day-glo paint, groove on Fugs in the bandshell. Today is not what we had in mind in the 60's.
