Post 63 gives Richard Dawkins scale, I like it. seems the graduated scale covers the full range of religious and non-religious views.
Socrates, who without question was an Atheist, loved to debate, and was wise not because he did not question life or the status quo but because he picked it apart every day of his life. In my view the person who quits questioning and debating is the clueless one. The other issue I have here is not one on the lack or abundance of gods, but that this is a thread on the difference between Atheist and Agnostics. There is still lots of directions to debate that question.
I agree with you, wopthedo. Other people can label me if they want, but I'm under no obligation to define myself in any way. I don't have to complicate myself. I don't want to think about it for even a second. Atheists have it dead wrong if they think I'm under any obligation to do so. I think that's what agnostics are probably getting at. Being a mystery in essence means being beyond labels, beyond this whole dispute. Saying you're agnostic is akin to saying there is something inherently ridiculous about this entire situation, all the fragile minds vying for control they can never obtain, trying not to appear vulnerable, human.
I think we all have a terminal illness called life, some will just have a shorter road than others. I remember when I had my first round with cancer how after the first month or two I saw clarity in life I had never seen. I was able to drop the marginal issues and direct life to the issues which had important roles for what time I had remaining. I have survived the cancer now at 11 years and some of the clarity I found still remains. As for labels, I am one who loves things to have a place and a name. I don’t care if I am labeled and Atheist or Agnostic, but understand I am a blend of both. To steal a word from the gay movement, I am proud to be non-religious, and will accept whatever label a person gives me as long as it shows I think and reject the lies which men use to control the uneducated.

I think they are two completely different things. An atheist emphatically believes there is not creator, of any kind, and an agnostic believes that there is simply no proof either way, so the only rational course is to neither believe, nor disbelieve, since neither viewpoint can be verified.
