Saying African Americans an unnesacary mouthful. I have many black friends, and not a single one of them would be offended by calling them black.

Calling a black friend AA is like calling a friend by their first and last name. Just why? I wish I lived in a place where race only was considered while doing the census.

 

Well, first of all, I'm not telling anyone what to call anyone. I'm just saying that "African American" is a stupid term. Second, the term is used in Canada as well as the United States. And third, I'm an American citizen. Dual citizenship. So I think I've got the right to say whatever I want.

 

If someone wants to call themselves whatever... I really don't see what the problem is. If black people want to call themselves "African Americans" that is their choice... and I don't know why anyone else would have a problem with that.

Anyhow... my entire point in this thread is that people should not be labled by their colour in the first place. I'm sure that people would notice the colour difference less and less if black people didn't make sure to point it out so directly through wanting to be called "African Americans". Plus, I agree with the original point... "African American" is completely silly. Refering to people by their skin colour is silly... but if you must...honestly... "black" works.

 

They can say whatever they want... but no one seems to want to give Americans the right to say what they want.
