The Taliban's war on women continues apace (msn.com)

What I want to say is that it is clear to me that the women and the men of Afghanistan want the same thing. Their goals are literally the same!

I think what is happening is similar in the United States. They are a lot like folks who are hawkish about liberal politics in education here, for example critical race theory...

or we might hear something about colonialism. A thought I had was that we as Westerners have set the standard for internet content regulation alarmingly low. I pondered around with the idea that a law could be imposed stating service providers must offer an opt in or out option with regard to adult mature content, in a way allowing us to set the tone by our choice. Instead, we have a morally questionable system for internet, and a firm position on music (Explicit lyrics and Tipper Gore... you had to be there...). If our values hold true, there should be something somewhere giving us a clue! Nope.

That makes us digital colonialists in a way, as other cultures adopt our same awful habits and moral failings.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is what is being taught in schools. Indoctrination... I believe that is what has Afghanistan concerned. We hear something in school, read something from a textbook and it becomes fact; regardless of whether it eliminates our belief system; something that is pure and cherished and guarded and sacred...

I value the right of Afghan women to be educated. I don't think intelligence is the enemy. I think that the fear is about indoctrination.

But education shouldn't be censored. It's honest...

I think the solution is find a way for teachers to align with the interests of Afghanistan and find a way that both honesty and religion prevail.

I think honesty prevailing is difficult. I come from a devout family and certain aspects of my education have provided me with a gift that to my family seems in conflict with their religion. I have opened my heart and my eyes to my education, but my religion isn't accessible unless I close my eyes again... It is in conflict for me in my family, and it has caused us to disagree on some things, though we still get along reasonably well.

Sometimes we as scholars need to find a way to be an apologist for our education.
