    • In the 1980s, the US and Britain backed Saddam Hussein in the war against Iran, giving Iraq arms, money, satellite intelligence, and even chemical & bio-weapon precursors.
    • America saw Iran as a threat because it had overthrown the Western backed Shah.
    • Hussein was bolstered by the West throughout the 1980's because his aggression to Iran resulting in the Iran - Iraq war was seen as useful in acting as a check on the rise of Shia power.
Whilst the lyrics may be different -'The song remains the same' ... And the title of which is ....."Cosequences"

And by happy coincidence, Iran & Iraq kept pumping out oil just as fast as they could to pay for it all, neutering OPEC. We got the arms sales and cheap gas...what's not to like?
Never mind the piles of rotting corpses.

The Taliban are composed of lynch mobs, and sort of a third world version of the republican party. They aren't so much taking over the country, as driving everyone else out of the country, and the only reason everyone else is leaving, is because the party's over for now, and there's nothing to be gained by killing a bunch of stone age throwbacks, while its easy enough to invade again, kill them all, and let God sort them out, without even the UN protesting.

Eisenhower and Theodore Roosevelt are the only republicans that I can think of that deserve some respect.

People always treat time as money, and money as time, which is why Afghanistan is behind the times, but my work is in automating instant karma, and turning the banks against each other. The idiots are so damned smart, they are automating themselves out of existence, and I'm hoping to speed things up a bit.

The entire world could not be falling apart any faster. It is the singularity, and we must prepare for the Tower of Babel to collapse. Even the computers are converging on a theory of everything, because everything is going down the rabbit hole, all at once! All of it, every fucking branch of the sciences, are all converging on the same answers, all the computers are converging, while the whole world ecology falls apart, and its not a coincidence.

The U.S., after the traumatic tragedy of 9/11, invaded Afghanistan to get Bin Laden and wipe out al-qaeda.

It was just revenge in action and not motivated by any noble concern for the people of Afghanistan. It did not have the approval of the UN as well which would have given much needed legitimacy to the action.

I think the absence of any concrete role for the UN probably alienated the Afghans and reduced their conviction to fight the Taliban who were vigorously portrayed as freedom-fighters by social media there, while the Afghan national army soldiers were portrayed as traitors and puppets of the rich US-NATO alliance and invaders.

I think this alienation would not have occurred if the UN was seen to be in charge rather than the U.S., or if the U.S.- NATO alliance had given a greater role for the UN to engage and operate there.

UN troops could have engaged and connected with the locals better culturally and might have created greater resolve in them to fight the Taliban better.

The Afghans could have identified with the UN better, as their nation is itself a part of the UN theoretically, and this could have induced a stronger morale and resolve within them to fight and mount a resistance against the Taliban.

This is also very unfortunate. The U.S.- NATO forces could have had as a contingency plan wipe out much of these equipment with explosives or incapacitated them to prevent it from falling into enemy hands.

The US military assessment had estimated that Kabul would not come under pressure from insurgents for a month after the withdrawal of US forces, but the taliban leadership is sitting comfortably in the presidential palace now.

This divergence between predictive assessment and actual reality shows that the US-NATO forces did not have much understanding of ground reality so as to make informed decisions at a strategic level.

I don't think Biden or other leaders had foreseen such a heavy collapse in the Afghan army which they had invested many billions in training and equipping.

It shows that they had not done their homework or due diligence well, and acted impatiently to leave just as they launched their invasion of Afghanistan 20 years back without much forethought.

I’m pretty sure he meant Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt Jr (Republican) not Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Democrat)

But you're forgiven since you reside on the opposite side of the pond
