I could be asleep, that doesn't seem to be verifiable in any way.

When you say you 'trust in reality', what else do you know than what is presented to you and experienced by you? A reality suggests there is something outside of that, but if there is, how can you ever know and how can you apply truth or falsity to it?

    How not?

I have on occasion believed things that turned out not to be true in practice, functional fit.

For instance, I once believed that I was alone, or could be alone. However in applying honest observation that belief is easily dissembled because it can be demonstrated that others exist. Consequently I can safely lay aside the belief that I am alone as an illusion. No matter that I may feel lonely that feeling is not caused by the fact that I am alone. The statement that I am alone is not true based on the evidence. Therefore I look elsewhere to discover the source of the feeling of loneliness. I no longer lean to the statement, "I am alone", as true representation.

Be good to others expecting nothing in return and the way opens up for you

Hold strictly to basic rules that you hold to be morally correct. A good baseline you could refer to could be the 10 commandments. since noone could really argue that these aren't good rules for living a positive life. Follow your moral code for as long as you can until following it is no longer a task, but a natural process. This is a clear spiritual state.
