The advantage of older folks is many of us have Social Security, which is as good as the stereotypical "Trust Fund". The place could develop its own businesses and the members' monthly checks could insure the lights stayed on.

I know Twin Oaks quit taking people over 50-something. Has anyone mentioned that here, yet? We could start a place in Charlottesville and vacuum off all the people Twin Oaks rejects for age!

I've lived in a red, borderline state all my life. Borderline as in kinda Southern but the state never officially committed treason. Well, I don't want to do a commune in most red states. The culture is oppressive, especially in rural areas. Virginia I might go for as there are so many intentional communities there, already, and I think there are advantages to being around other communities.

I imagine life in a rural area of any red state is centered around:

High school football and all the sadism one sometimes finds in coaches and jocks.

Church. Religious bigots, kooks, and simpletons.

    The Trump cult.

    Believers in the Q Conspiracy.

Klansmen and Nazis. (Although Portland and Seattle have white supremacy.)

Nothing wrong with hunting but stray bullets could be a problem.

People who won't wear masks and think covid-19 is a conspiracy to prevent Trump's re-election.

No, I won't live around all that :)

This week I have been filling my absentee ballot, and helping two others in my family do theirs. It's an example of how communal living could work out. Another thing I do a lot is cook good stuff. Lately, I have been boiling green beans (Kentucky Pole Beans) to make them soft. I also fry up diced onions in another pan. Then when they are cooked enough, I mix them together. After that, I crack some eggs in with them. Then the entire thing goes over a tortilla or pancake. To give it good flavor, I put salsa cassera and some hot pepper sauce. It's an easy way to feed several people at the same time. When Hippies live together they can save money by having breakfast together.

For our food supplies, we could sign up with an online vendor, say like Thrive Market. We could get bulk certified organic foods though them, when it comes to packaged stuff. I know they have Fair Trade coffee, and genuine flour, as in Buckwheat flour from real Groats. They also have organic soap, like DR Bronner's. I like fresh veggies and would want to grown my own; but, if we live close to the Amish farmers, we could get lots at the end of the growing season. I like fresh peaches and plums at the end of the season.

If our commune is near a Kroger store, we could get peaches, plums, and boobs all at the same time. I've never met a female named Irving before. How do you feel about a bunch of crazy old guys who live near a Kroger store?

Right by the Kroger store. In Nebraska it would be the Piggly Wiggly store.

I remember a Piggly wiggly in Fargo. Nebraska has Hy-Vee's and Russ's market.

Take East Wind, in Missouri. There can be so many feuds it's a good thing people can't have personal firearms.

But, ironically, there are firearms for hunting and pest control, which are kept locked up. When I visited, I saw a pro-hunting and meat eating member verbally berate and abuse someone of the opposite, more vegan view. Since then, I've heard members there have mastered the skill of butchering animals raised or hunted. So, ironically, while members cannot have a gun in their pocket, the place isn't a gun-free zone.

I suspect most communes in rural areas find they need a rifle or shotgun for pest control. Fox can become rabid. Rabbits can wipe out a garden.

But, knowing the personalities and people dynamics found in such communities, I wouldn't want private gun ownership, no matter how I feel about the sacred and sacrosanct Second Amendment. :)
