When this commune idea was born, it was for older Hippies, over 55 years old. It was for the ones who live on limited income and who do not wish to live alone. It was about sharing life with good people our own age, and with similar outlook on life, and the quality of life. Such a Hippy life sharing commune is not a front for right wing extremists, who use guns. It is not a place where right wing extremist Christians or end-of-times fanatics could demand that others comply with their views. I would rather live with Wiccans, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, or non-religious persons. If anyone is interested: Please be in the United States, old enough, and serious about this. I don't want to get into another pissing match over gun ownership or Christian end of the world fanaticism.

Hey there, Stormountainman. I don't think it's always a bad thing to have a few ideals and dreams that may not become real. And while someone is thinking about a friendly haven for retired hipsters, it would be kinder not to break in looking for a quarrel.

Well, I tried for the first few years, as you suggested. The problem is I got a bunch of Christian fundies who want to bring guns to the commune and turn it into an end of times survivalist camp. I don't want that. People who are not interested should just stay away to allow persons who do want to live in a peaceful Hippy home to participate, huh?

TBH I'm kinda shocked and saddened by the responses to the desires expressed by storm re: firearms. I mean c'mon so he doesn't want to be around a bunch of firearms *for whatever reason*, this is his thread, his plan, his search for like-minded souls to share space with in their golden years.
Why is everyone busting his chops over this and taking it personally?
Last I checked the "create new thread" button was still there.

And in all fairness it seemed to me at least a foregone conclusion that the commune would not be located in either Texas or the amazing state of Arizona anyhow, (And if you really like guns, that's where you're going to want to be)
So could we maybe leave our friend here in peace, free to pursue the sort of community he desires without having to piss all over his salad just because he's not making an ideal spot for is 2A friendly folks?

Thank you Fritz. I was just thinking that when guns are nearby when people argue, it might turn out bad. And besides, 65 year old Hippies will not be going out into the wild to harpoon and feral hog. Old retired Hippies who need a hip replacement operation are not going to hunt deer? We could just drive down to the store and pick something out of our own organic garden. We could tend our garden, watch Netflix movies, play music, read books, and just talk with each other. I don't want to build gun turrets or defense emplacement or a field hospital to prepare for the end of times when Jesus returns for the rapture.

I really like your idea of an adult hippie commune. I don’t like all the obsession with guns and right-wing ranting. I knew a number of people who lived in a commune in Western Montana in the 1970’s and admired their desire for peace, love, and harmony. Many years ago I read the book “Not so wild a dream” by the late Eric Sevareid about his thoughts in 1930’s Minnesota. I too think the brotherhood of man is not so wild a dream.

Thank you for the nice comment. I spent some time around Missoula in 2014 and 15. I really love that place. I seem to remember you and I talked before about the one restaurant there ... good breakfast joint on Higgins street. Brotherhood of man is what's missing in the modern version of Hippy world. We were about sharing and the new are often all about themselves. Some of the new Hippies are aware of social justice. Some who claim to be Hippies are more like Libertarians than Socialism Hippies who share. I'm now reading Robert Pirsig's second book : "Lila" … Metaphysics is the High Country Of The Mind. Pirsig wrote Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance back in the seventies when he took a ride from Twin Cities to Bozeman. I would love to do that again and find a little town where they have affordable chunks of ground to set up a Hippy Commune.

    AHO Stormy,
I figure a lot of what I have to say, ain’t copacetic with most. But now and again I volunteer experiential information.
You want a commune - you live it.
You see, communes are about living and working and growing together. REALLY ! And it’s very rare that individuals can come together and make that happen. In doing so, so much is often sacrificed. If the individuals are fed (ain’t talking food here), the community has a better chance of surviving - and conversely, a much harder time getting started. Was much easier finding people 50 years ago who were ready to give their all for what had an extremely high chance of dissolving even before coming to fruition. Nowadays, there just ain’t the people willing - most often, it’s just too much like work. Bloody sad fucking truth.

And a hi ho to FRITZ - still in NM, my email is out there - you should be able to find it - sometime maybe we coulda woulda shoulda meet - or not. Still the nomad hermit.

    Blessings be with all.

All my old friends were/are republicans. After many heated arguments, we decided to NEVER--EVER discuss politics again. It worked perfectly and we remained friends for years. It can work that way, but also can be limiting in a way. I was interested in the commune idea some time back and I understand how stormy feels. I'm out of the loop now due to my living circumstances, but no way in hell would I ever want to live with anyone that was right wing/republican on a daily basis. It would be endless strife for someone like me. So I get where he's coming from and those that feel differently should just move on and go away. I wish it would come to fruition because I would love to visit a place like he envisions. Might even change my mind and stay--who knows?

I think communes are a great idea for retired people on a limited budget. We could all contribute something and live more cost effectively than we could individually. There could be a communal dining area, schools, entertainment, shops... It could be self-sufficient by selling products manufactured by the commune or we could just pay into the commune for membership and receive food and housing in exchange.

Yup---old folks have an amazing array of talents. Art work--woodworking--pottery,gardening, building, etc. Many ways of supplanting income for a commune. I would have any and all roofing covered.

Okay... I think we're more alike than you're aware. Us "crazy" freedom lovers live like you describe the commune - we work together as a family to build stuff to improve our condition, and to teach our offspring to be productive and self-sufficient. We believe we're owed what we work for, no more and no less. And we don't like outsiders trying to tell us what we can and can't do, or trying to steal the fruits of our labor. We believe in helping the down on their luck get back on their feet. But not maintaining able bodied people who would take advantage and not contribute.

All the things needed to make a commune successful.

I could live in a commune with a big variety of people. I just don't want to live with some Republican who tells me day in and day out about John 3:16, and Ronald Reagan, Trump, and other horse shit.
