Of the things people can become "addicted to" (actually there's only a short list of substances inhaled, injected, or ingested that are addictive, and the only non-substance addiction is gambling), the only one I engage in is consuming alcohol. I'm not addicted to alcohol. It doesn't interfere with the things that I say are important to me in life. Not every compulsive disorder involving a substance or activity is an addiction. Most are not. Empirical research is necessary to demonstrate that a substance or activity is potentially addictive, and most things people who are not mental health professionals call "addictions" are not. That's because there's insufficient evidence to support inclusion. Saying doesn't make it so. Some examples of non-addictive behaviors that people may misuse and overuse to their detriment are internet porn, sex, social media, and exercise. Just because a person stay up all night, night-after-night, arguing with people on Facebook or jerking off to porn, and ruins his/her marriage, parenting, and job performance because of that activity, that doesn't make it an addiction. It's comforting for many people to blame their own poor choices and attempts to hide from their responsibilities on addiction, but usually, it's simply a matter of bad behavior, personal choice, not addiction. While caffeine has powerful chemical habit-forming and withdrawal properties, it isn't classified as an addictive substance because it doesn't produce the harmful effects to the rest of life that, for example, consuming meth does. Most of the things people have identified as their addictions in the four pages of comments before this one are not addictions at all.
I used to pipe Anzac Day memorials at CENTCOM every year for the Australian, New Zealander, and Turkish forces who were stationed there. Coffee with a tot of rum was integral to their traditional "gunboat breakfast"...and I suspect, their hospitality, which always seemed to me to be without parallel.
Nothing wrong with that...My first wife and I had sex every day for the first two years of our marriage in our mid 20's.
