I believe a woman has the right to choose whether she wants to have an abortion because she should be able to decide over her own body, and anything growing inside whether alive or not, whether 'human' or 'fetus'- does not have any rights yet as long as it is totally dependant and attached to the mother's body. The whole baby/fetus thing doesn't come into it for me. And before anyone asks me, what if I got an accident that leaves me totally dependant on others, or what about a newborn who's also completely dependant; newborns are no longer physically attached to anyone! You can leave a newborn alone, not for long of course, but you can put him in the crib while you do something else in the same room. You can even have someone else hold him. And for the accident, of course it can't happen, there is no accident that could make me not only dependant on others but also *physically attaches* me to any one other person, but for argument's sake let's assume there'll be a Star Trek transporter accident and I would become attached to someone else. Then yes, it would be up to the other person whether they'd want to keep me alive or not. I'd rather hope they would but they would be within their rights to kill me if they really wanted to be rid of me. I wouldn't want to make anyone carry me around in or on their body against their will.

RE: And before anyone asks me, what if I got an accident that leaves me totally dependant on others

    The only difference is -

when you get cabbaged or too old or sick or stupid to be of any "worth" to others, they usually snuff you with a drug overdose in a relatively benign way

    whereas

being disassembled with surgical instruments is a way of checking out that I personally would find abhorrent at any age.

Once again - let me reiterate. I am pro choice, but I will NOT mince words or sugarcoat anything.

I believe it is a woman's choice but wow, what a choice to have to make.

When a pregnant woman miscarriage's at any stage of her pregnancy the baby she lost would be viewed as a human being. Tell her that is wasn't because it was never born, I don't think she would be very happy.

I would never judge anyone who had an abortion but I could never do it myself.

    I agree with you, IronGoth.

As far as this issue goes, from a moral standpoint, I'm against abortion. And that goes as far as a personal choice as well. I'm currently pregnant with my first child, that by all rights, any other girl my age would have at least considered abortion. I could not.

I think that from conception, there is more intelligence in those developing cells than science and pro-choice advocaters choose to believe. There is documented proof of the show of emotions, character, and personality from as little as 8 weeks gestation. That's not instinct. Those traits continue even into adult life.

However, I think that until birth control options become more concrete in their effectiveness, and sexual education more complete for every individual, we cannot rightly tell a woman that she cannot have an abortion.

Also, as long as there are women out there without the means to obtain birth control in any form and lack the state of mind to protect their bodies, while still maintaining the state of mind to have sexual intercourse (ie. under the heavy influence of drugs) we cannot force these women to have children that will just enter into foster care or group homes. In most cases, hopeful adopters DO NOT want children with physical ailments that could have been prevented (ie. fetal alcohol syndrome, etc.). So why should our government force these women to have children that they will just have to bitch about supporting later on down the line.

This whole issue, this whole situation, is ridiculous.

I'm pro-choice. Unless the woman changes her mind like 1/2 way or something but thats another topic. Anyway, It's not fair to bring a child into this world without the love of it's parents and don't say put it up for adoption almost half of the kids put in there are aged out of the system. Not, that I'm against adoption just that there's so much stress on that system already. Why add more?

For me personally, an abortion is just wrong. But I still want, that everyone who choses it, has the opportunity to get it in a clean environment, from skilled people, and not in some dirty back house with a rasorblade and a crocheting hook, done by a butcher....

I'll take that one step further.

If you ARE very pro-life, do something about it. Put that Bible down, and go out and start a non-judgmental, non-denominational shelter that'll give these women more than lip service.

Yay for abortion being legal and allowing women (and their men) choice. Gov't has no business here, it's a personal decision.

Nay, in general, for abortion. There's enough birth control out there, and if you aren't ready for a baby you shouldn't be having sex anyways. Rape/incest is different, and there are probably other contingencies I haven't thought of. I will say this: late term abortion is certainly wrong. Get a clue before then. Third trimester should be off limits (except where the mother's health is concerned) and even second trimester should be frowned upon. Stop it ASAP, or keep it.

some really intersting and different ideas here. i wonder if the 'baby' has it's 'character' earlier than eight weeks?...maybe it is a soul coming to life? and then....the morning after pill is also a from of abortion...the fertilsation has taken place...life has begun...Personally i do think the life that has come into creation has the right to life...but at the same time..that life is being given and fostered by the mother...and she can choose whether to give that gift or not. And maybe she doesnt feel that she wants to give it life..or that she isnt capable...

On the other hand...is not having children a selfish act?..to live your life...without having children? is that just selfish if you are a woman?, because you have this ability?

and our mothers and fathers...made the choice to give us life..and look what that generosity has given us!! so is it a selfish act to take away that oppotunity from another living being?

becuase for whatever reason..the life has come into our body, and we are the gateway for that life to grow...are we killing a part of ourself? are we killing a potential that holds so many miricales we cannot fathom them?...

i have no idea what housing a baby inside must feel like...But when pregnant?, do you feel like you're housing a soul?, another person?, or do you feel like you're continuing life in a form that grows from your form?, like another part of your self?

how much identity does the baby have?, does it feel like 'you'..or 'someone else'?

RE: allowing women (and their men) choice

Not so. Men do not yet have this choice.

RE: I will say this: late term abortion is certainly wrong. Get a clue before then. Third trimester should be off limits

What happens when this happens is that they simply find ways/means to stall the process until it becomes late term at which point they say "sorry illegal"

NYC is one thing - rural IOWA is another.

what about a woman who never wants children? should she abstain her whole life? BC is not 100% effective. my mother got pregnant on BC as well as my best friend. there are alot of people, particularly young woman and teen girls who dont want children right now, but telling them that they should not have sex, while its probably the right thing to do....its just not going to happen. people are going to have sex no matter what.

i knew someone was going to say that.

so every woman who doesnt want kids should steralize herself? i dont think so. what if she changes her mind later on in life? having your tubes tied or whatever the procedure is costs money as well....not everyone has money for that type of thing.

It's needed in cases of incest and rape. It's also needed if there's a known medical problem that the mother or child (or both) will die during/soon after birth. Other than that, people need to take responsibility and not use it as a form of birth control. The child can be given up for adoption, or--what a revolutionary idea--use a condom if you don't want to get pregnant!

One of the scientific definitions of something that lives is that it grows and developes. Please tell me you see the difference between this and this! Another scientific definition of a living organism is that it responds to stimuli. Now let's take a look at this quote.

"Experiments done with fiber optics, for example, show that the fetus turns away when light is shined on it; other studies show an increase in heart rate and changes in the movement in the fetus when loud music is played, or when the mother is experiencing states of stress. These observations suggest that even before birth there are specific behaviors being modified and changed in response to experience, and that the fetus is in the process of learning all about them."

To all those people saying that if you don't want children, use a condom/birthcontrol....THEY'RE NOT ONE HUNDRED PERCENT EFFECTIVE! What do you tell a woman that has used a form of hormonal contraceptive AND a condom and still found herself pregnant? "Sorry! Shouldn't be having sex!"???

No. You can't just deny humans a form of interpersonal recreation because it also has other purposes. Humans have the instinct to have sex. We can't deny that. And sometimes, it's impossible to abstain. And those women that have taken control of their sexuality and their sexual responsibility are having to deal with a great burden, specifically dealing with the margin of error that birth control poses on them. Until birth control becomes 100% effective all of the time, you can't say "use protection or abstain." That's a ridiculous argument.

As to what OP asked about what it feels like hosting a baby inside of you...It doesn't feel like a continuation of me. When my boyfriend talks to the baby, I feel this amazing sensation of joy coming from my abdoment. It's not MY joy. This baby will have his own likes, dislikes, character, and attitude. He is his own person.

I believe that there is a soul inhabiting his forming body. He can think and feel emotionally and could long before his body grew into anything human looking. However, it's not possible for a government to rule over spirits. And a spirit isn't a viable living life. It makes this issue quite murky.
