Abortion and voting Someone has told me that the Republican party in their area of the US probably gets at least a third of their votes from people who will always vote for whoever is the most strongly opposed to abortion in all situations. Now to me an abortion is a terrible thing, a tragedy, (but that doesn’t mean I’d ban it because some women still seem to need it and so banning it would only drive it once again underground and prosecuting someone for having one seem like just heaping tragedy on top of tragedy). But the question that the issue always rises in me is why, why are these women wanting an abortions and why do they need one? It is probably difficult to get definitive reasons for having an abortion it is a private thing and some wouldn’t wish to talk about it but we can get some inclinations from surveys on the subject. Here are a couple chosen at random. http://www.nrlc.org/archive/abortion/facts/reasonsabortions.html http://www.religious...org/abo_why.htm What I get from them is a sense that the problems are educational and financial So maybe the best way of tackling the problem is to concentrate on education especially sex education and looking at what kind of assistance can be given to such women to ease their financial fears about having a child. So if you wish to limit the number of abortions wouldn’t you be voting for a political group that promoted comprehensive sex education, universal healthcare and childcare provision. Someone? I'd love to see a recent opinion poll that shows how many voters plan to vote for the GOP in all situations for as long as they are the anti-abortion party. I've looked, and I can't find one. I know it can't be 100% of all Republican Party supporters, but I know it can't be anywhere close to 0%, because I hear so much about it, so often. Many of them are quite emotional about the topic, going so far as to claim opposition to abortion as one of their primary purposes in life, and possibly the main reason God put them on earth at this time in history. Getting people to obsess on a single issue can be a highly effective method of getting people to consistently vote against their own interests.
Relevant: the Senate just voted to defund Planned Parenthood. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/defund-planned-parenthood-republicans_566078aae4b079b2818d8011 Ugh. Less than a week after the shooting, and this is how the Senate responds? This is like elementary school, when one kid would act up and the teacher would punish the whole class. Luckily Obama said he's gonna veto the shit out of this. At least we have one sensible soul up there.
Problem is that planned parenthood is a lobby group. I'd be more supportive of the organization if they didn't receive government funding while simultaneously campaigning for certain politicians. What if the NRA received government funding? It's the same principal. I'm pro choice myself. Abortion should be a choice, a difficult one to make with lots of consideration. People who get abortions because the fetus didn't turn out to be the gender they wanted it to be are horrible people.
Abortion is never a comfortable subject but I think it's more realistic for our society as a cumulative group to be pro choice. This disagrees with me and I can't justify it, but there you have it. Pro Choice has my vote.
