Been doing teardown on the mower... Had several thing that I've wanted to do, changing the belts gives me incentive to do everything else at the same time. I dropped the mower deck outside before putting the tractor in the garage for the rest of the work. Those blades are beyond trashed... More parts I need.

Anyways, hood and muffler/exhaust system are off and the engine is being cleaned... there's dry grass and shyt in places grass should never be. One of the things I figured I would find and a reason for tearing this thing all apart. It runs good, engine is solid so worth the effort. (18HP Briggs I/C twin)

I think it wants a dual exhaust system. :D

EDIT: I just pulled the shifter top plate and saw the rear belt for the first time.... holymotherofcrap is that thing wasted, there are chunks missing! I gotta get a picture before I remove it. Hard to see how it was working at all. I'm not changing belts because there was an actual problem running/working, it ran and mowed all weekend. I just knew they were original 1998 and the front belt showed some cracks. Figured I better do this before I'm relying on this unit 2-3 times a week for hours on end.

Now I know it wants dual exhaust...

I don't know if you really and truly realize how that man, and people like ME feel...we are so grateful for you and others like you (of course I'm assuming there are a few other competent, knowledgeable tree people combined with cutting knowledge) - competent and not liars....begging combined with extra dollars is still considered a deal and a Godsend. I couldn't be more serious either.

I assure you I realize very well how few and far apart those of your caliber are. Yeah, I can promise you, others like you are parsed sparingly across the land.

I am surrounded by huge oaks that I love in a tree-hugging kinda way, but I love this home also...and knowing someone (a local, trusted and respected company) that can help in a bad situation is literally something that helps my sanity.

I care not at all if (when) people call me silly.

    And you!!! :D

I do believe you...all that you do...but it is almost unbelievable how much you do do, and can do.

MYGOD, motors of all types and fences and copper piping and animals and music and EVERYTHING. :2thumbsup:

It also about blew my unblowable mind when I saw those fence posts (telephone poles one could definitely compare them to, imo) you'd set and shown in that picture, without even a posthole digger.

How in the world are you, were you, able to do that?

On the very best day of my life, at my very freakin ultimate peak, I don't think I could do pole setting alone.

and at my dang intellectual peak, I'd never have been able to do the piping, mechanical and etc type work because my brain just can't do it.

I'm quite thankful my son's brain can and does do all that. (His father was an alcoholic but he was still imo practically a mechanical (and all round handy man type) genius.

I'll get pictures when it's done... I need to get some of the front yard too, before the flowers fade.

One reason I get stuff done is I don't stop for photographs. ;)

I abhor religion as much as I do people, both are false for their own gains.

I don't get anywhere near enough sleep....

Checking seat mounting situation. I have a "universal" high back seat some guy gave me last year... None of the holes line up. (Universal my ass) Drill time. It is a better, more comfortable seat and there's no tears in it. I had it on the "Deere John", but it was all wrong for that machine. I'll have many more seat hours on the mower than any of the others, so it's gonna get this one somehow.

Got a lot of the cleaning done last night, must have been ten pounds of ancient grass stuck up in hidden places of this mower... Little chunks of that disintegrated belt too. Motor was caked with grass up behind all the cooling shields... couldn't have been air cooling very well. Carb was caked with grunge, etc. etc.

Not supposed to rain today but might tomorrow so I should be doing fence posts today.... Just realized I don't have a functioning tractor at the moment unless I put a seat on Deere John... ( <<< play on words is intentional, not due to a lack of sleep)

I thought he was a she....no matter....we keep religion out of the chat threads for a reason.....some of us are more spiritual in that way than others....it is a private choice that I respect....so she/he can march on over to the religious forum and spread dismay over there....or just don't talk about it here and stay and participate ;)

My front yard today... Part of it anyways. I hate having to downsize and crop so much just to upload a photo here. Kind of missing the point when I have a few semi decent cameras that can take some pretty good photos and then once I post them nobody can see anything.

Anyways..... This is that rear drive belt... I'm amazed this tractor even moved. But seriously, vintage 1998, it's had a pretty good long life... If I get that much life out of it again after this rebuild it's going to be well worth it. Front drive belt isn't anywhere near as bad but both are getting replaced. Deck belt was replaced last year and is still good... I've got a spare too, just in case.

do all the speeds work right?

im just asking because that sheave on the right looks pretty rusty and i think thats the one with the middle part that slides up and down to adjust speed...they usually rust up and stop sliding...and there is a small needle bearing on the inside that goes bad and makes it flop around on the shaft

@ Ty: Everything, EVERYWHERE on your property is just amazingly beautiful!

I know you put an enormous amount of work in your place, and it looks like this special place deserves it. :)

Thanks Lynn... Everything in that picture has been here all along. I'm just the new caretaker. If I don't maintain it the whole place will go to crap.

Yeah, all 7 speeds work as they are supposed to... even with that belt. If it needs more than the belts, this is the time to do it so all that will be getting checked. (although blades will have to wait until next month)
