RF..... (Dog and cat lovers will get this) It's so interesting having Erin the crow vs other animals. When you point at something, she looks where you're pointing... not at your hand. :D

Birds are so intelligent. Buttercup (Kierans budgie) use to do that as well. She also "talked" and would natter back at the proper time with the word that fit. She was one of the most lovely and interactive pets we ever had.

We all still miss her. :(

you saying she turns her head so one eye looks straight at where you point?.....do all birds have that left side right side thing happening?.....aren't eagles different ....I seem to remember some blurry stuff from science class about bird eyes

Crow eyes are quite forward facing for a bird so she actually faces what I'm pointing at.

On the other point some birds can see almost 360 degrees... That's the "left side right side" thing.... Hunting birds, raptors, owls, etc tend to have more forward vision. (Crows too)

I'm quite certain I could be wrong about this...but I always thought the "main" (or known) animal that had the left or right side looking ability is a horse.

The pupil in a cats eye is vertical so it can see the bird in the tree, the mouse on the floor.

The horses pupil is vertical so that it can see what is coming up beside it on the field.

That's what I learned way back somewhere.

Seeing 360 degrees sounds pretty cool... until you realize there would be no depth perception. 3D comes from having the overlap of forward facing eyes. Ask anyone that only has one good eye.

^ that's what I was really thinking; but I couldn't think of another one (then) besides a horse...

And another one (or 2) I thought of...an elephant? a hippo?

Also, I'm really thinking of mammals or birds...not reptiles or fish, which seem to all (I can think of) have eyes on the side of the head

Take it from someone who's had 3 significant eye surgeries and 60+ stitches sewed in and cut out... It might sound cool, but I would not willingly fuck with your eyes. :) IMO.

The thing with Erin that started all this is not eye placement though... She knows what pointing is for. "look there" not "look at my hand".

Cataracts run in my mother's family, and poor healing from this surgery is also common in the family...so HELL NO I would never want to get eye surgery unless I was about blind and felt that was my only alternative.

night vision injections... :yikes: (plus I think that would be plain stupid to risk harm to one's eyes for something like that)

But back to Erin...I'm not surprised she knows to look where you point. Crows are smart, and she is extra special. :)

Well, some people may read what I post and think I'm a prick but I'm really not. I admit...I am a perfectionist but I'm only a prick when provoked. And I went on about how I expect it to be perfect but I really don't even expect that. I expect these guys to avoid the obvious errors. But I do expect my guys to be perfect. Back when we used to do a lot of residential work...the guys who had been around would basically tell the new guys...we won't get in trouble for running over on time to do things correctly but he's not going to be happy if he sees corners cuts and has to send us back out. And they have always tried hard because they know I give a shit about them and their families.

But enough about perfection....here is a story about the most humble moment of my entire career....I remember it like it was yesterday. About 15 years ago we had a job for a very nice couple who I liked a lot. We've done a lot of work for them. This job was a Mulberry removal on the north side of the house. Easy. It's the only tree there and the only Mulberry they had. I sent my "top gun" to do it with his crew. No reason....just luck of the draw that he got that work order. He called me and said it was done and I told him to move on to his next work order and I'd check it out later that day. A couple of hours later I got a call from the customer...who wasn't home at the time the work was done. They cut down the wrong tree. They didn't just cut down any tree either. They cut down a nice ornamental in the front yard. It was a tree that all of their daughters had pictures taken under every year as they grew up. All of the girls had their prom pictures taken under it.....and now it was gone....and I couldn't fix it. I had to go over there and face them. My best crew dropped the ball. Both the husband and wife were literally crying and I felt so horrible about the situation. I told them that I just didn't have the words to say that could fix it. An apology doesn't cut it. It's unacceptable and it's completely our fault. We ended up doing the Mulberry for free and we removed another large tree (maybe $2500-3000 tree) for free. It was the least we could do in a situation with no solution for us.

When I got back to the yard later, the foreman was very upset with himself. He's a great arborist and he just made a mistake. When he saw me he simply said "I fucked up...big time! I can't believe I did that". I said "Yeah....never do that again" and walked away. He knew I was pretty disappointed that day. But the moral of the story is....that's part of why I'm such a stickler for perfection today. I never want to experience that again. I want every customer to come home and say "Wow!! My trees look awesome!!" And I also want my men to be safe and unharmed....so yes....sometimes I'm a prick but it's for a good reason.

Now if my contractors could just get on the bus with that mentality.....

No... mud isn't as much an issue as wood chips/sawdust. By the end of the season I have wood chips everywhere throughout the house.
